Quince is recognized as one of Holland's biggest talents in the techno scene. Since his first release in 2006 on Amsterdam's Delsin label, he impressed with his well produced, warm house sounds.
From October 22 to 25 our capitol is the stage for its annual Amsterdam Dance Event (ADE) again. Beatfreax has created the ultimate online guide to keep you up to speed with the coolest parties and venues during the event.
First of all; can you tell something about yourself?
Well, I’m very bad talking about myself, but I think I’m an easy going person who likes his job a lot and likes to live his life close to his friends and family.
I understand that your first contact in the house scene was with acid house in studio 54, with dj Raul Orellana. Can you describe the journey you’ve followed yourself throughout the years? How did you grow as an artist?
I was a really young guy when I started to hang out in clubs, I was lucky because my uncle was the manager of studio 54 and Raul was always spinning there… I kept telling to myself, one day I will be like him, after that period I lost my interest for music for a while. 95 was my first year when I started to be interested in music again, with the big boom of the Valencia scene.
Did you go to school or had an education for being a dj/producer?
No I started alone, with the decks of friends of mine and little by little I got better to get where I am today, but still I have to learn more, I don’t think I know everything about being a proper DJ.
Where do you get your inspiration from?
From almost all the everyday situation that happens in my life, if I wake up and the day is good I can work very fast and I realize my ideas really quick as well, but if the day is bad I can not produce well what I have in my mind. Also I don’t like to work under pressure and when I know somebody is asking me for something too specific.
You are a very busy man with record labels like “Shake” and “Smack” records, a lot of gigs, mixing cd’s, your own club night at CLUB 4 and managing your SCI-FI record shop in Barcelona; do you have any spare time?
Well unfortunately I stopped to manage the record shop, it was too much with all the others things and I had to choose my priorities, but I know I am living my life and I have to do all of this if I want to reach my dreams, it is really hard but also comfortable at the same time, because I feel I’m doing well with all my projects right now.
When you do? What do you like to do in you spare time?
Just be in my sofa enjoying a match of football and staying with my dog, I love him and I miss him a lot when I’m on tour, hahaha…
Can you tell something about your own club night?
This is one of the hardest job I’m doing right now, but also one of the things I’m enjoying the most, because I love to see that what we do with my 2 partners, Marco Carola and Christian Smith, have the support of many people, not just clubbers, even dj’s and agencies are great and make you feel special, because all of them believe in your projects and ideas.
How would you describe your style now?
I’m always a techno dj, harder or softer depending on the night ,but always techno in all his facets, maybe now I’m more into minimal techno than in the techno loops or hard techno, but still I’m enjoying when I have to play more hard in few clubs..
I’ve seen you perform for a couple of times now, but to me the best performance was together with Alex Under @ Poema September 2006. Did you enjoy djing together? Do you do that often? Dj with somebody else?
I¨m always enjoying when I work by myself as a Dj or with someone else. It is always a pleasure to spend time in clubs, but it is true that sometimes you enjoy more when you are with a close friend, because it is more like a party friends, with Alex is always great, but also when I spin with Marco Carola I feel always super comfortable and enjoy trying to be the best and the most surprising of both, hahaha
You’ve already seen a lot of things, Dance Valley and Awakenings festival in Holland for example but also a lot of other things in the world. If you take a look at what you’ve seen already at this point, what was a stunning experience or did you like most? (think of locations, crowd, atmosphere etc.)
I really like to play in festivals, but I enjoy more when I play in small clubs. Poema or my own club ‘Club 4’ in Barcelona are always specials nights, but if I had to mention one, I think Goa in Rome is one of the place where I really enjoy to play at the moment because of the special atmosphere, I also like Watergate in Berlin a lot.
Are there any things you really want to do and still haven’t done?
Yes for sure, many, many things, but I think the most important is to build up a family and have kids... later on I would love to teach a small Paco to spin, hahaha
Is your record "cretine" (on Marco Carola's Fabric cd) ever being published?
Yes that track is already released, but just in digital format on Beatport, it is the 5th track on the plus 8 EP, but it is exclusive for Beatport.
What is your experience with final scratch? Can you tell something about that?
Im used to Final scratch since its first version and I’m very happy with it. It is not always perfect but it is running smoothly almost all the time. I love to use it for two reasons, first because I can play my productions the first day I finished producing them and check how people react on the dancefloor (before sending it to be released.)
Moreover, I can play special edits I do ,hahaha. I’m aware I should do the same with the cd´s, but this is the second reason, I need to touch vinyl, I don’t have the same feeling with CD’s..
Therefore...I really recommend people to go and use FINAL SCRATCH hahaha
What can we expect of you in the future? Is there for example coming up an own album?
Yes, I think this year I have signed a few EP’s for different labels like M-nus, Ovum and rmx for frankie rec. four twenty and a few more. If all of this is good and I have a bit of free time for next year I´m going to produce my first album, I already started to do something for it, it is not just going to be for the dance floor, I will do something special you will see..??? haha
Beatfreax would like to thank you for your time and this interview and hopes to see you soon!
