Tilburgse dance organisatie City Sounds viert binnenkort haar vijfde verjaardag. Op zaterdag 13 december aanstaande is het groot feest in 013, de locatie waar City Sounds al een aantal jaren succesvol resideert.
Als legendarische DJ, succesvol producer en vooral als baas van het befaamde Gigolo Records, is DJ Hell uitgegroeid tot een waar icoon! DJ Hell mag met recht 'der Kaiser' van de electro techno genoemd worden.
Spanish techno giants Cristian Varela and DJ Pepo will team up again on November 22nd at Awakenings to close the event with a 2-hour set of Techno with Spanish flair.
He's all over the place. As a DJ, he's known for spinning a wide range of music from minimal techno to deep house to glitchy experimental. He continues to release records and CDs under a variety of aliases - mostly 'Flowchart' and 'Someone Else' (but also Commercial, Blowball, Flowtron and others). With a discography that can cover an entire wall, Flowchart accumulated a ton of press (thanks to Girlie Action) and was one of Urb's "Next 100" in 1998. Flowchart went on to dent the ambient/experimental scene with releases on over a dozen different labels in countries like England, Germany, Japan, Greece, Canada, Italy, Norway, Russia and Scotland. Flowchart continues to pump out an extraordinary side of quirky, kitschy, dorky ambient and experimental electro-pop. Someone Else is O'Neal's minimal tech-house dancefloor-flavor - where he primarily delves deeply into a the Foundsound sound with deep, pumping throbbers doused with glitches, crackles, pops, low sub-basslines, sliced 'n' diced field recordings, dissonance and dubbiness - yielding tracks and remixes for his own labels Foundsound, Unfoundsound and Tuning Spork, plus Musik Krause, Microcosm, Nummer, Remains and others. As for his Someone Else music, lately Richie Hawtin (a.k.a. Plastikman) and Magda have been playing several of his tracks during the majority of their DJ sets. O'Neal (as Someone Else) also did a variety of remixes including Frankie Bones and Glory B. His debut single on Tuning Spork, "Poop Trax v.1," received great reviews from the press--including De:Bug Magazine. His new record on Musik Krause, "Ball Lickin EP," is breaks new ground on the hottest label in the scene at the moment. He also has a track on each of the first three Tuning Spork 12"s EPs and loops on both volumes of "Looping Spork" (along with Swayzak, Stewart Walker, Pacou, Sender Berlin, Zip, Geoff White, Archetype and many other notable minimal techno/house producers). As Flowchart, he remixed Lali Puna (for Morr Music), Mall, Fingernail, My Favorite and some others. Is he exhausted? Not really.
O'Neal curreently runs two record labels, Fuzzy Box Records and Foundsound Records, and also founded Tuning Spork Records (along with Jay Haze a.k.a. the Architect/Dub Surgeon and Bjoern Hartmann a.k.a. B.). The first release on Foundsound is Someone Else + Msikate (co-founder of Foundsound), and the release is called "Rip It Cookie Muenster" - featuring a remix by Matthew Dear (a.k.a. False, Jabberjaw). This record became what Dan Bell calls "Berlin's summer anthem of 2004," gained a ton of press, and it sold out immediately. Other DJs playing it include John Peel, Richie Hawtin, Magda, Ricardo Villalobos, Steve Bug, Troy Pierce, Cabanne, Dimbiman, Sammy Dee, Matthew Dear, Jay Haze, Fabrice Lig, Josh Wink, James Holden and many others. Fuzzy Box has well over 20 CDs and 12" releases of irresistible electronic experimental groove-tunes from artists like Bochum Welt, B. Fleischmann, Color Filter, Lesser, DJ Swingsett, Junior Varsity KM, Accelera Deck, Technicolor and many more. As for Tuning Spork, this is Philadelphia's first and only minimal tech-house label, quickly followed by Foundsound. Tuning Spork is currently up to 12 vinyl releases - either already in stores or on hold for manufacturing. But in Philadelphia, Tuning Spork was actually better known for their monthly and one-off events (and, even more, the legendary afterparties). O'Neal and the other Tuning Spork Dorks have hosted and played alongside DJs like Daniel Bell (a.k.a. DBX), Jeff Milligan (a.k.a. Algorithm), Dinky (formerly Miss Dinky), Adam Marshall, Tomas Jirku, Markus Maeta, Shawn Rudiman, Phillip Charles (of Tigerhook and Sylk 130), Chris Udoh (of Tigerhook and Wamdue Kids), Magda, Dennis DeSantis and others. As for Foundsound, this is a bran new label. Currently, Foundsound hosts a monthly minimal party in Philadelphia called "Pitchspork." So far, guests have included Matthew Dear, Sammy Dee (of Pantytec), Magda, Stewart Walker, Geoff White, Jeff Milligan, Greg Shiff and Pneuma.
Currently, O'Neal holds several DJ-residencies in Philly, and he continues to spin and play live all around the country and world with about 3+ gigs a week - already having played in Spain, England, Scotland, Switzerland, almost every major city in Germany (including the infamous Tresor Club in Berlin), Canada, most major American cities, and, most notably, multiple month-long tours in Russia where he was the first American DJ to ever play in five Russian cities - including Kurov, Izhevsk and Nizhny Novgrod (Russia's third largest city) - and he has been invited to tour in Russia every year where he now has made a decent name for himself.
O'Neal is also a member of the 611 Records team in Philly where he works alongside Nigel Richards, Dieselboy, Carl Michaels and others. And for the sake of some fun ancient history, he, in the early and mid-1990's, helped throw big, big raves in Philly and NYC along with The Pure Children. They have hosted DJs like Paul Van Dyk, Derrick May, U-Ziq, Laurent Gaurnier, Ken Ishi, all three Hardkiss brothers and many others. From then, O'Neal was DJing at raves regularly - having played alongside countless luminaries like Orbital, Josh Wink, DJ Sneak, Green Velvet, Bad Boy Bill, Jon the Dentist, Simply Jeff, Mike Dearborn, T-1000, Deep Dish, Adam X, Lenny Dee, Rob Gee, Delta Nine, Armand Van Heldon, John Aquaviva, DJ Icey, Ben Sims, The Advent, Scott Henry, Feelgood, Pete Moss and countless other cheeseballs.
Currently, he also pays the bills with his journalism. O'Neal's writing has been seen in publications like XLR8R, Philly.com (Philadelphia Inquirer), Philadelphia City Paper, CMJ Monthly, Faqt Magazine, Digitalcity.com (AOL), Philly2nite.com, Audio Gliphix, Elevator Service, and various other low-key publications.
