In the summer of this year, Germany’s DJ icon Sven Väth will fulfill a dream he has long nurtured by opening the CocoonClub in eastern Frankfurt. We got a hold of the first blueprint images which look absolutely stunning! In the summer of this year, Germany’s DJ icon Sven Väth will fulfill a dream he has long nurtured by opening the CocoonClub in eastern Frankfurt:
The concept’s ambitious content and deliberate variety is designed to emulate his legendary ‘Omen’ club in redefining the term of contemporary club culture and revive Frankfurt/Main as the international playground of the electronic music avant garde.
T
he CocoonClub is on the ground floor of the U.F.O., an architecturally outstanding loft building belonging to the Goldmann Group in Frankfurt’s ‘Ostend’ district. The compact triangular construction provides a mixture of office space, events and gastronomy, making it ideal for the CocoonClub and its two affiliated restaurants.
The Wiesbaden agency 3deluxe transferred Väth’s vision into progressive spatial design that symbiotically combines aspects of architecture and media. The interdisciplinary team of designers and architects has influenced pop culture in recent years with unconventional spatial and graphic concepts in the same way as Sven Väth has done with his music.
The result of their combined knowledge of the scene is an exceptional correspondence between music and design philosophy that makes the CocoonClub so unique.
The CocoonClub was conceived as an avant garde field experiment for transforming space and perception. This is reflected in the targeted convergence of club-culture media such as music, moving light, images and film projection, combined with the ‘genetic architecture’ of 3deluxe, which was partly inspired by biological examples in designing the interior.
The characteristic trait of the CocoonClub is the variety of its different spaces and the interconnected use potential they provide. In addition to the actual CocoonClub, where visionary electronic music focussing on Techno, House and Progressive styles will be played on Fridays and Saturdays, there is also the ClubRestaurant Micro – an innovative mixture of restaurant and club – and the exclusive BedRestaurant Silk.
The CocoonClub provides a wide range of ways to spend an exceptional evening, accommodating classic club-goers, gourmets and art and design enthusiasts alike.
COCOONCLUB
The centrally situated CocoonClub consists of a triangular main space, surrounded by a permeable cell membrane wall containing 13 capsule-like, glazed micro-rooms. They allow visual contact between the active inner spaces with its main dance floor and the quieter surrounding area with its adjoining lounge.
These so-called cocoons, in which one can relax in padded chairs or have a quiet chat with someone, can partially be accessed from both sides of the membrane wall.
“In addition to the cocoons that can be reached by all club guests, it was important for us to design a kind of lounge in the upper areas of the membrane walls as a kind of modern theatre box. These VipCocoons, which allow one to withdraw to a private and calm atmosphere right in the midst of the public activity without losing contact with the events on the dance floor, are very luxurious and can be exclusively reserved for an evening,” as Matthias Martinsohn, who will manage the CocoonClub together with Sven Väth, explained. Martinsohn was already one of the managers of the legendary ‘Omen’ club in Frankfurt.
The most visually impressive element is without doubt the DJ pulpit, whose organically influenced form seems to have merged with the membrane wall. From a high vantage point, the DJ and VJ can conduct the room’s multimedia spectacle and thereby control the mood on the dance floor at any time. The media technology which is controlled by specially programmed software opens unlimited creative possibilities for designing the club atmosphere.
“We wish to create a sustained platform for artistic expression in club culture with the CocoonClub in Frankfurt/Main and to develop the Techno genre further on the highest level. But above all, we want to present current electronic music trends to a broader audience. One main eye-catcher will be promoting as yet unknown, innovative newcomers,” as the charismatic Väth underlined.
On Friday evenings, we have the “Godfather of Techno” Väth plus other resident DJs such as Richie Hawtin, Miss Kittin and DJ Hell. Regular highlights of the Friday programme are DJ legends such as Carl Cox from Britain, the Frenchman Laurent Garnier and live acts such as Technasia, Anthony Rother and Underworld.
The musical concept on Saturdays includes the Cocoon-DJ Toni Rios and well-known greats such as Terry Francis from London or Michael Mayer from Cologne, together with renowned international live acts such as Swayzak from London and 2Raumwohnung from Berlin.
CLUBRESTAURANT MICRO
The ClubRestaurant Micro offers a fusion of European and Asian cuisine, plus a cultural and musical programme that changes every day.
The Micro shows its versatility throughout the evening: its modular interior, consisting of warm, dark wood and grained bamboo surfaces, allows the harmonious coexistence of various different activities. While some guests enjoy a quiet dinner, part of the restaurant is used as a relaxed lounge. As the evening progresses, the presence of the musical background grows, gradually inviting the guests to dance. The room’s transformation from a restaurant to a lounge to a bar and finally to a club with a DJ occurs very smoothly.
One further eye-catcher of the Micro is a ceiling grid covering the entire space, consisting of vertically hanging white threads that enhance the whole room’s geometry.
As a contrast to the cubic furniture, this linear matrix structure is decorated with opulent media ornaments: Projected images move in time with the music and thereby illustrate the varying three-dimensional sound spaces the DJs create.
During the restaurant business, the glazed show-kitchen is the main attraction of the Micro. The 3-star chef Mario Lohninger, who himself loves electronic sounds and is a true aesthete, was excited by the idea of combining experimental cuisine with an ambitious musical and architectural concept. He decided in favour of the CocoonClub, leaving his position as chef-de-cuisine at the renowned New York ‘Danube’ restaurant, where he developed his unmistakable personal style.
Mario Lohninger’s surprising combinations of elements of traditional Austrian cuisine and selected ingredients from around the world are evidence of a special creativity and sensitivity. The food in the Micro is light and easily digested, freshly Asian with a touch of down-to-Earth European style.
Every evening, the Micro, which is open from Tuesday to Saturday, has a different musical motto and is regularly combined with a cultural event. Soul, Funk, R&B, World Music and NewJazz are some of the musical themes that have an important place in the Micro.
BEDRESTAURANT SILK
In the BedRestaurant Silk, the food and drinks become an artfully dramatised ceremony inspired by the Asian and ancient Greek/Roman culinary traditions.
The guests initially enter an atmospheric reception room, where they exchange their shoes for textile footwear. The Asian-inspired ritual emphasises the private atmosphere of the exclusive restaurant and also hints at the unusual gastronomic experience to come.
From the entrance, the visitors are guided over a gently springing surface to one of eight large-scale lying areas that are separated from each other by semi-transparent gauze curtains. One can lie or sit on each of the soft mattresses which are draped in white and enjoy the gourmet chef’s culinary delights. The exquisite delicacies and drinks are presented on fine wooden trays that are designed for setting down in the indentations around the bed-rests. Changing light dips the white gauze in harmonious colour combinations and enhance the guests’ well-being.
In the more exclusively priced Silk, Mario Lohninger will offer menus that change each week, always providing new challenges for the imagination and experimental nature of the dynamic young chef. The Asian influenced sound atmospheres of the DJ are in perfect harmony with the tasted sensations from the European-Asian 3-star cuisine.
The VipBed is a special attraction – a separate room reserved for bookings and special events. In the under-water style atmosphere, surrounded by fascinating virtual life-forms, one can be pampered by a relaxing back massage before or after a meal
Rumours say the total costs of the club are around 7 million euro's! We can't wait for it to open!
