Last Saturday it was time again for OWAP, the Original Warehouse Acid Party, organised by Joost van Bellen’s Meubelstukken. At OWAP you usually know what you’ll get: (somewhat cheesy) house and techno classics from the late 80s/early 90s, not a lot of acid, smileys and stroboscopes, and last but not least a great atmosphere. This time was not much different.

When I arrived at the party (after a messy entry, it took more than 20 minutes to get in), Mark Verbos was playing no nonsense and tweaking dry acid, just the way it should be. But unfortunately the audience wasn’t really feeling it and people were busier with talking than dancing. After Verbos’ half our-set it was time for Graeme Park and Mike Pickering, the once resident DJs at probably the most infamous club of the acid house era: the Hacienda in Manchester. The duo clearly enjoyed themselves, playing a feel good old school house set, but I have to say they failed to hold my attention during the set. But fortunately, more and more people were drawn to the dance floor by obvious classics such as “Plastic Dreams” and “Good Life”. The Hacienda duo were followed by a short intermezzo with another house legend, the singer Byron Stingily, known for his vocals on house anthems like “That’s the way love is”. Stingily sang live over a couple of these classics with Joost van Bellen behind the decks. Although Stingily demonstrated his great voice, the performance didn’t really work out, among others because of poor sound.

Then it was Joost van Bellen’s turn. He played what the audience wanted to hear: classic tracks with an acid edge to them (among them one of my favourites: dr Phibes’ “Acid Story”). Although the sound went out twice during his set, the crowd danced enthusiastically and the party really got going. DJ Roog took over from van Bellen and I have to admit his set really surprised me: straight-up classic house tracks with balls mixed with techno anthems (I never imagined hearing Roog playing an old Robert Armani-track). The crowd loved it and everybody was all smiles. After Roog the old master Dimitri showed what he’s made of and played by far the best set of the night. He never lost momentum and treated the ecstatic audience to energetic full-on techno classics, bringing the audience from climax to climax. After Dimitri, Eric de Man turned it down a notch finishing off the night with inevitable anthems like “Solid Sessions”, “Promised Land” and “Strings of Life”.

All in all I had a great time. The sound wasn’t too good, some tracks came along twice, the bar was a nightmare (it easily took 20 minutes to get a drink), the entry was a mess, the decoration could have been better (I missed the real smoke and stroboscope-mayhem!). But nonetheless, in the end the great vibe and the music made the party. As expected, I and the rest of the crowd danced our ass off with a big smile.
