After his summer smash hit "Napolitanzer" together with Fokko Versloot it was time for Beatfreax to ask him to do a mix for our podcast. And here it is! An awesome mix with tracks by e.g. Nils Number, Dimitri Andreas, Lopazz and of course the man himself.
Taking absent minded decisions may lead to the fact that you find yourself at 2300 hrs on the doorsteps of a closed temple. Nonetheless, taking absent minded decision can sometimes also save you the embarrassment of having missed the main act because you arrived 1 am. While All Is One did not really kick off until midnight, the early birds like we, were provided on the mid-floor to the balconies with North African beats, a cup of tea, and if skill permitted also with water-pipes. In general Paradiso was surprisingly well prepared for a night of “music, dances, smells, as well as spiritual and physical trance!”
I guess there are many ways how to turn Paradiso, the Dutch pop-temple, into a spiritual playground. Carl Craig, who started at midnight with a semi filled main-floor thus pleased the fans with a 2 hours set of well-known tracks. Usually known to be up there in the front, evolving and revolving around the frontiers of techno, electro and dance music in general, his approach this time seemed to be based on the idea to play it safe, to play it from the mist of well known tunes. Keeping the fans jumping with hands up in the air and the average club goers happy, there was nevertheless little that one couldn’t hear at any other electro/techno night at any other club in Amsterdam. Though, the excellent mixing quality was definitely what made this night stand out from the usual Paradiso parties, and the sound seemed also finally to be perfect.
But those craving for more soulful entertainment were definitely not disappointed. In that respect, the set by Dimitri proved to be more inspiring. Playing an impressive mix of electro and techno accompanied by a well thought and atmospheric context of spirituality, he seemed to leave the crowd speechless. Thus, when hearing deep techno with the lights off, the screens blank and only Dimitri himself lit by a ray of light, the main concept of All Is One actually dawned on us: it was about the trance that could best be described as a religious act, a moment of musical enlightening by belonging and being part of something bigger. A unique and hard to forget moment!
Given that Carl Craig along with Dimitri were the highlights of the night, the following performances by Quazar and Isis faded and could hardly live up to what had been before. This is of course not to say that the music was bad by itself. It’s just that after listening to the deep and strong sounds of Dimitri the lighter electro played by Quazar felt like beer after vodka, a bit mellow for the heightened senses. The concluding set by Isis was a good stretch for the tired body that by 4 in the morning was hardly capable of more than to transically and exhaustedly hum to the break beat.
Considering the fame on the main stage it wasn’t surprising that the chapel upstairs and the downstairs dungeons were less crowded. Thus the set by 16 Bit Lolita’s was probably one of the few reasons to leave the hold of the square inch space in front of the main dj booth on the ground floor. The other possible reasons being the need for more space and escaping from the beer that people quite generously seemed to spill .
The music was accompanied by a variety of performances involving exotic dances, wicked Egyptian costumes and stimulating visuals by Vj’s Seicho Kabinet Azar and DUSI. Great respect for the one who came up with the concept! The mood was also set by ODO7 filling the stage with an array of exotic scents, that went really well with the general spiritual touch of the venue and the music.
So, all in all it was one of these nights that last well into the morning. On top of that what made it unusual was also a bit more food for the soul than what you’ll get at an average, or even above average party. And, considering Jean-Jacques Perrey’s idea that the best music is what children dance to, the All In One party in Paradiso was indeed a big hit with a lot of good music. Thus, kudos to all the organizers and the artists for this great night full of excellent tunes and an unforgettable atmosphere! To all of you who missed out on it: shame on you! :)
