My 5 days off 2006 started in the Melkweg with the very rare, not to say nearly impossible, performance of the Happy Mondays. Those of you who saw ’24 hour party people’ will understand this. Those of you who didn’t; these guys ought to be dead by now due to all the drugs they took in their career. So I walked into a completely full MAX at 22.00 (!). Photographers were only allowed to take pictures near the stage during the first 3 songs so I rushed to the front to snap some shots. Sadly my camera batteries died on me after only 5 pictures… My impression: the crowd loved it and danced their ass of. The volume in the MAX was a bit too much for my unprotected ears (what’s the use of having expensive earplugs if I keep forgetting them?) and the music didn’t quite tickle my fancy so off to Paradiso I went.
Just missed Maxïmo Park but overheard a conversation in the toilets that they put on a brave performance. I parked myself on the balcony from where I had a great view of all the equipment Hot Chip had set up for they gig. 5 synths, a drum machine and a sampler: just add nerds to get Paradiso going! I saw these guys last years in the upstairs room at Paradiso and as was shown last night, they deserve a bigger stage. Great vibe, lots of girly girls and even more blue fluorescent 3FM ufo’s flying around! Strange sight…
Then it was back to the Melkweg again where I walked in to the old room during Booka Shade’s first track. These guys are the best act to have emerged in the scene in the past couple of years. Every track was as catchy as the next one and the crowd loved it. This was ‘you-don’t-need-drugs-to-dance-all-night’ music. This is proof that minimal music does not have to be boring. This was hot and sweaty. Smiling faces in front of and behind the powerbooks. The crowd was roaring when ‘Mandarine Girl’ kicked in and even more so when it ended. This was what I have come to expect from them, guaranteed party. If you don’t know Booka Shade go check them out!
Luciano & Ricardo Villalobos were not coming due to an Iberia strike So I decided to go back to Paradiso and see what all the fuss about The Infadels was about. A few impressions: A guy getting on stage twirling a cup-holder on his finger while holding an arm around the lead singer – he got thrown of stage after a minute. Then there was this guy who decided he wanted to stagedive and jumped into a large gap in the crowd and fell flat on his face. A huge crowd of pogo’ing people in front of the stage, and in my opinion; a mediocre performance from an ok band. Still don’t understand what the fuss is about. So back to the Melkweg.
Ellen Allien & Apparat were playing a nice set although they were having some strange problem with their computer. It spontaneously stopped and started playing during the end of their show: ‘look mom, no hands!’. Funny to see Ellen singing though... And then a funky-booty-techno freight train hit me right between the ears. Dave Clarke literally pounded away my last bit of energy with a set of raw electro/techno and classics mixed in here and there. The (very beat hungry) crowd was still going strong when I decided it was time to go home. Let’s see what day 2 will bring!
