After his summer smash hit "Napolitanzer" together with Fokko Versloot it was time for Beatfreax to ask him to do a mix for our podcast. And here it is! An awesome mix with tracks by e.g. Nils Number, Dimitri Andreas, Lopazz and of course the man himself.
Traffic’s 5 years anniversary could in advance be seen as a summary of 5 years of good parties with refreshing line-ups. Traffic is always at the techno front and has had many debutants during their parties. This edition on the other hand was reserved for the residents and some of the best acts of the last 5 years, which have proven their abilities.
For the anniversary, Traffic took place in the larger Max of the Melkweg and this seemed necessary for the many enthusiast visitors of this night. With a cool video wall and two large screens with projections, combined with a loud sound system all ingredients were there for a great party. Aron Friedman opened with a nice set, but I missed unfortunately the most of it. At the end of his set, the Max was not that crowded. But during the set of Bart Skils this changed rapidly and the empty dance floor was take over by of course, dancing people. His set build up from minimal to techno and off beat and during his set the energy increased more and more. With three decks he had nice combinations and the audience picked up his sound very well. After a well-deserved applause to one of the driving forces behind Traffic, it was time for tonight’s live act.
Reeko was invited, after a great performance on a previous edition. Known for his heavy and dark off beat sound, which became a little much of the same a few years ago, most people were curious what kind of developments his sound had made during the last years. Would it still be the same, what can I expect? At the beginning of his set it was already obvious that he made much developments. His set was solid and more four to the floor oriented, but still contained a great layering of drum patterns and soundscapes. These soundscapes were fascinating dark and even though beautiful. It could clearly be noticed that other artists inspired him and for example some Aphex Twin tunes could be heard during his set. The audience danced and screamed and his refreshing set was well appreciated. To the end of his set he played more deep and experimental tunes and with a smooth flow he worked towards the end.
Rocco honoured the Traffic crew and announced the Spanish techno king: Oscar Mulero. His start was not that direct and hard as the last times I have heard him, but he took some time for building up and soon his typical drive was found. From that moment, the whole crowd was enthusiast reacting on the well known off beat and other deep records he played. His technique is really impressing and although he is able to deliver great sets on three decks, tonight he showed that even with two decks his sound is still massive and mechanical. The Max was filled with dancing people and everybody seemed to enjoy this great set as much as possible. Although he is always very concentrated on the decks, one could see him smile and having a good time as well; that says enough about the atmosphere this night. His last record was surprisingly LFO’s – Freak. What can I say more than how did his great set make us freak! What a celebration of 5 years Traffic; now up for another 5 years or more.
Loved it! Traffic was just what the doctor ordered - a very much needed stress discharge! Went berserk, thanks to Reeko and Mulero, and not to forget Skils. Sorry that I missed your set, Aron. Props to the Traffic team, hope that you had a great time as well!
