Report

Words by: Pebee81
After a break of two years it was finally time again for the Love Parade to make a re-entrance. Former years they couldn’t go through with the organisation because of discussions with the government of Berlin about the disposal expenses, for the people who didn’t knew that. But this year by making new agreements about the disposal, sound and safety and by all lot of sponsoring they made it happen again. “The Love is back” was the motto of the Love Parade 2006, and nothing could express its return in Berlin more appropriately. More then 1,2 Million partypeople came to this main capital to party and share their love again for old time sakes. Definally a rise above all expectations of the organisation as well as the visitors.

On Friday the 14th of August was the Official Love Parade Opening – Party, named “The Love from Above” @ The Club @ Arena & Glasshaus with names like Paul van Dyk, Sander Kleinenberg and Steve Porter. We didn’t visit it because our travel took about ten hours so a good rest for the next day was just what we needed. But it was definally not the only party that was going on in Berlin at the Opening night of the parade. The whole city is totally under the spell of the Love Parade. Only this night more then 30 parties where organised all over this immense city with artists from more than 17 nations. Maybe “electrolicious” is a good word for describing the feeling this gave me when I took a look at the line-ups!

After a good night of sleep it was time for the real thing. On Saturday the 15th of July at exactly 14:00 the Love Parade started for real at the Siegessaule. And a rush of full power energy went through me, you are standing there with 1,2 million totally enthusiastic and fully dressed-up people counting down, shouting and wishing and waiting for the kick-off. And at the moment supreme a percussion act started and big “Love Parade-balloons” went one-by-one into the air together with big blasts of smoke. The crowd produced an overwhelming sound, hands got into the air and the floats and crowd got moving.

All together there were 39 trucks, the so-called floats and they moved along Strasse des 17 Juni to the Siegessäule (Victory Collumn) where the legendary line-up of top international DJ’s of the Electronic Dance Music scene began at 18:00. The biggest part of the day we stayed at the area around the Siegessaule, because we really felt like dancing and enjoyed all the floats passing by. The biggest dancefloor in the world this area is also called so why not enjoy it to the maximum?

I experienced the day in total as one big mix of cultures going mental combined with nice international sets that really rocked the place. With as highlight the set from Ricardo Villalobos and Luciano at the Siegessaule. they rocked the place up! But especially the vibe and friendliness of all the people will stay with me for a while, but there where also a few things that disappointed me a little that day. Point one is that the floats (trucks) where a little bit under decorated if you ask me. The trucks formed some kind of whole by having almost the same prints on every truck and not to many extreme (under)dressed people on it. Pictures from past Love Parades showed a lot more happy and special decoration, maybe its to blame on commerce? But gladly the crowd straiten a lot up on decoration front.

Another point was that the beers where totally sold-out at about 22:00. You are there for the music off-course and other drinks where still available but still it shouldn’t be possible. I think the unexpected big rise of people was the problem. But there was one thing I really didn’t understand, and that was that at the ending with all the highlight artists at the Siegessaule all the floats kept on moving around through the crowd. Moving through about a million with big trucks is a challenge. People really got a lot of pressure on them and it didn’t gave an extra something to the concept, so why? But I like to end with that overall I enjoyed the parade to the max and I saw a lot of happy dancing people with smiles on their faces the whole day long and that’s what its all about, isn’t it?
