Review

The Campfire Headphase has turned out to be a surprisingly light-footed, and warm-blooded album, and it is quite arguably their best one to date.

It has been three years since Boards of Canada released their previous album, and a lot has changed in that time. Geogaddi was conceived in the aftermath of 9/11, and its dark and moody soundscapes reflected the angst and uncertainty of that day and age. Three years later, that same fear and paranoia have become a daily reality; a part of life. Enter The Campfire Headphase, but whereas Geogaddi reflected the brother's (Mike and Marcus Sandison) feelings at that time, this album was made to reflect their current urge to escape.

Boards of Canada's version of the proverbial 'light at the end of a tunnel' has turned out to be a surprisingly light-footed, and warm-blooded album. The numerology and mathematical concepts, the audio palindromes, the references to David Koresh and his Branch Davidians, and the hidden messages (i.e. The Devil is in the Details) that made Geogaddi such a complex and mind-boggling concept, have all but gone. What has remained are the intelligible voices in the background, their tyical nostalgic and fragile sound, and a knack for producing the most beautiful electronic melodies. For the first time they have also added guitar loops to their sound, and although they commonly use musical instruments, albeit distorted and mangled into unrecognizable fragments, they have never used them in such a straightforward way. By doing so, they have really added an extra organic dimension to their sound, and it suits their music well.

As great as the differences with its predecessor may be, The Campfire Headphase really is a classic Boards of Canada album, and it is quite arguably their best one to date. It takes you on a mind's trip from the relaxing sunny beaches of Satellite Anthem Icarus to the dark and enchanting forest of Peacock Tail, only to rise above the canopy with Dayvan Cowboy and take a dive into the wondrous waters of '84 Pontiac Dream. It is the perfect soundtrack to a lucid dream, or some other form of late night relaxation. Enjoy.

Really need this one! BoC are one of the groups who can't do anything wrong in my opinion.

Can't compare it with Geodaddi. This one (Campfire) is more influenced by acoustic music.

Nope. This album from BOC is the only thing i have heard of them and after two listening sessions i deleted it. It bored the hell out of me. Nothing slightly remarkable happens in the music.
