Beatfreax podcast: Daniel Sanchez
He’s the bad boy of the Amsterdam techno underground: Daniel Sanchez, 26 year old son of a Spanish father and a Dutch mother, who scored one of the biggest hits of the summer of 2007 with the infectious ‘Mumbling yeah’. Daniel’s ‘mumbling’ vocals give the track that special edge.

Review

Hardware-wizz Marc Houle is back with an album, his third now on M_nus. Below follows an overview of what stands out and what is peculiar on this release.

‘Deathray at you’ is a track that most of us will label as a typical Houle track. Very minimalist and very 8-bit. In spite of this the problem is that the melody lines are so basic that they easily become monotonous. Nevertheless, Houle modulates the melody in such manner that it becomes quite remarkable in some cases. At some point there hardly is any melody left due to the effects used and at another point it becomes very dissonant, which is very eccentric.

‘Meatier shower’ and ‘Sands’ are both very boring tracks, whereas ‘Jouster’ has a bit more charm, but does not stand out. Finally ‘Ketchup and Beans’ is the deepest track on this release because of a threatening bass, however, it is the same concept here as with most of the other tracks; one sound that gets quirked around in every possible way. Not bad though, not bad at all.

Marc Houle is definitely a guru when it comes to so-called 8-bit minimal and this release is very much a continuation of his established productions. It’s a shame ‘Investments’ is not included with the physical release as this track is overall the best. It reminds of an earlier production on his first album called ‘pepper’. Very cool melody, killing climax and outstanding drive. Although not the best compilation of tracks on this album, it certainly is atypical compared to many other existing productions out there, and as a result worth checking out.
