He’s the bad boy of the Amsterdam techno underground: Daniel Sanchez, 26 year old son of a Spanish father and a Dutch mother, who scored one of the biggest hits of the summer of 2007 with the infectious ‘Mumbling yeah’. Daniel’s ‘mumbling’ vocals give the track that special edge.
Mike Shannon has been around for many years, then again, this is his first appearance on Plus8 records. Shannon is known for a more melodical approach in his productions, which should be interesting, since this album contains no less than 11 tracks.
‘Mercury Mile’ is the first production on this album, which isn’t dreamy but rather gets things started instead of the usual ultra-boring intros. The track builds up for several minutes and once the beat kicks in definitely becomes funky. Although it is not a masterpiece, it undoubtedly is an above mediocre tune.
Now let’s go straight to the master piece then in order to discuss the relevant stuff, because you may be in for a very nice surprise if Shannon never really was your favourite producer. ‘Dr. X’ is possibly the best track since quite a while on plus8; it all starts very peaceful, then suddenly a threatening delayed bass sound kicks in and things become appealing. One may think this track is already ‘made’ with just these basic elements. But be patient until the very end, as after 3 minutes the main theme drops in and this melody line is absolutely amazing! Some excellent tension building before and when the kick drum shows up it couldn’t get any better. Outstanding track!
Finally there is another tune on this album, which certainly is worth mentioning. 10 min. ‘Love Fry’ is one that in a way is quite similar to ‘Dr. X’ although it doesn’t climax that much. Nevertheless, it has a rather pleasant melancholical middle part that fits in just fine. After the sentimentalness the raw bass line takes control again and safely lands the production until the end.
This album has a variety of different type of productions, of which ‘Dr. X’ by far outshines the others. There are also some less melodical tunes to be found such as ‘Japanese Censorship’, which actually is a very cool track as well. On this album there should be something for everyone and there is no doubt about the high quality of Mike’s productions. One can tell he has been in the business for quite a while and hence he deserves some credits for a strong album debut on Plus8.
