Review

One of the absolute biggest techno pioneers in Europe not only switches to CD, but also comes with this fantastic live DVD.

I think Dave Clarke has always been one of my favourite DJ’s and producers (especially around the mid 90’s). I still listen to Archive One now and then just to relive the techno feeling I had back then.

Just recently he announced to switch from vinyl to CD’s for his DJ sets; the man always seems to push things ahead, which frankly I think is a big part of electronic music. So now comes a CD/DVD combination with “the best of..” on CD, an interview, behind the scenes, clips and 2 live shows.

CD
First the CD. It contains a lot of well known tracks like “Way of Life”, “Southside”, “The Compass”, “Thunder” and “What was her name”. All one by one classics! Clarke has his roots not only in techno but also uses his hip-hop, punk and electro background in his productions. This makes his music stand out from others and gives it all the typical “DC-sound”. I have to say though that his music has to be played loud and preferable in a huge, old building with lasers and smoke. Just listening to it in the car stereo or at home doesn’t get the power across each track has.

DVD
On the other had this package comes with a very nice DVD. This disc contains 2 one-hour live shows; one at our own Pinkpop and one of the Belgian Dour Festival, 2 clips (“A Way Of Life” together with DJ Rush and one of his collaborations with the Chicks on Speed “What Was Her Name”). Besides that are a nice “On the road and backstage” (at the Cream Festival 2004) and an interview.

Especially the show at Pinkpop blew me away. I myself heard him at Lowlands, which I though was pretty good already, but this show seems to even have more impact on the audience. Of course a lot of tracks on the CD pop up at the DVD again, but this time I think they stand out way more. Which is strange actually, because Dave himself is not that kind of an entertainer… but he let’s the music speak for him. His music just needs screaming people, flashing strobes, smoke and lasers, it’s the way it meant to be.

The clips are nice, but after seeing them once that’s about it. The “On the road” part on the other hand is very nice and gives a great insight in what live techno performances a all about. The interview is very nice as well, it actually really surprised me a gave me a totally different view of the man! See Dave smiling, laughing, joking, and learn what he thinks of Belgium, humour in music and his switch to CD’s. I found it a very interesting interview indeed.

All in all this is a very worthy package to buy. Not only do you get a lot of his best tracks on CD, but you get a very cool DVD which really let’s you peak inside Dave’s life and besides that makes a great show-off to your friends and parents who never went to a techno party before.

Dave will be playing at Awakenings on the 18th of February 2005 in the famous Gasworks (Gasfabriek, Amsterdam). If you have the change to check this out DO it! This is just the place his music belongs and lends itself for.
