Review

The Berlin based musical trio My My (Carsten Klemann, Lee Jones and Nick Hoppner) have been hailed as the up-and-coming performers and producers on the metropolis’ tumultuous electronic music scene. With a residency at Watergate, regular gigs in most of the major clubs and numerous international performances, My My has in the past year indeed been inquiring a solid reputation both in Germany and abroad. Following 3 successful dance-floor hits they have now released their debut long-playing ‘Songs for the Gentle’ (Playhouse Records).

From the 12 tracks on the album 9 have never been released before. Based primarily on minimal and tech-house the collection begins with simple repetitive loops in ‘Clean Break’, dub driven beats in ‘When It Rains’ and pure minimal in ‘Eleventh Hour.’ ‘Reverse Change’, ‘Blue Skies’ and ‘Pelourinho’ then smoothly move from minimal to tech-house and prepare you for the culmination of the album in the emotionally charged and movingly melodic ‘Propain’. Tech-house inspired ‘Half A Hole’and Hip-Hop influenced ‘Secret Life Of Pants’ then somehow disappointingly conclude the album.

While in terms of overall coherence the 3 bonus tracks fail to integrate into the whole, they do add value to the album. Listening to for instance ‘Got It’ thus brings back quite a few wonderful party moments from the by-gone summer. The proven dance-floor hits that demonstrate a much bolder and daring approach to music than the new tracks are and will therefore remain the trademarks of the collective.

To conclude, it is difficult to say which songs, if any, will pick up on the success of the previous My My releases. Personally I think that ‘Propain’ has a good chance of emerging as a new hit on the minimal scene. While the rest of the tracks are not bad, they do require a second or even a third hearing before fixating in one’s mind. Overall thus, the album is interestingly compiled, shows a new face and introduces previously unknown interest of the members. It is definitely worth listening in to.

Just recieved this album. I have to say that I really like this album. Listened it for 3 times and 'een belletje gaat rinkelen' it its very comparable with other names @ Playhouse----> For example: Isolée, LoSoul and Rework. I say close your eyes and dance................... very lovely! The way I like house music.
