Today’s modern DJ does not seem to create mix CD’s anymore by means of turntables; the computer is taking over. In Magda’s case this is a joyful fact since she managed to put 71 tracks on it! A quick look at the track list reveals that Magda used a lot of well known artists in order to create the mix CD. Every big M_nus artist is represented; Ricardo Villalobos, Heartthrob, Marc Houle, Gaiser, Troy Pierce, Plastikman and Magda herself. But there are also rather new and upcoming names to be found on the list such as JPLS, Tractile and Glimpse.
This musical journey is divided into 16 pieces whereas every piece of the trip holds about five tracks. It starts quite easy and catchy. But soon the listener will enter the so-called ‘zone’ where it becomes simple to get carried away by the music. One of the first outbursts in this CD takes place when the vocals of “Louderbach – Grace (Anxiety)” show up in the mix and they morph with “Robert Babicz’s Battlestar”, an absolute brilliant combination. Short after this, Magda decides to use some more melody in the mix through tracks by among others Konrad Black and Larry Heard. But this doesn’t last really long, Magda’s highlights her raw side for a while where one of the most remarkable parts is probably the mix between (among others) “Gaiser’s Breathe Here” and “Vivianne Project – Chicken Bone Charm Bracelet”, it’s mysterious and extremely energetic at the same time. Not far from there the listener will hear a vocal repeatedly saying “She’s a Dancing Machine” (by Slacknoise). This tune gets amazingly mixed with others like a track produced by Magda herself entitled “The staring contest” and an extraordinary one by Damian Schwarz called “RyF2”. Unfortunately this is already one of the last mixes. Some more artists stop by such as Marc Houle, From Within (a duo between Peter Kuhlmann & Hawtin), Bruno Pronsato and DJ Koze but when the mysterious bells and strings from the first track (“Duoteque – Lola”) show up again, the end of the mix is a fact.
This CD is an absolute masterpiece. Magda has used the computer in the way it should be used; instead of concentrating on mixing skills she focused on which tracks fill each other up best. “She’s a Dancing Machine” is a fantastic mix to listen to and get carried away by, but it can also be a huge source of inspiration for DJ’s that are not completely convinced with the idea of mixing and editing tracks with a computer.
