Review

After Kiki's first attempt on the BoogieBytes series, this time its Berlin based Sascha Funke to "do his thing". A beautiful and well constructed mix is the result.

After Kiki's first attempt on the BoogieBytes series, this time its Berlin based Sascha Funke to "do his thing". A beautiful and well constructed mix is the result.

To be honest, I lost interest in the so called “minimal” a bit due to an overkill of uninspiring releases. These last few weeks though artists like Âme, Trentemoller, Reinard Voigt and a few others have flipped me back a bit. The “soul” and melody are put back into the music which gives it a refreshing glance again.

This compilation is a great extension of this trend in my opinion. Opening with the beautiful laidback sounds of Efdemin’s “Jean” and “Synthic” it’s Trentemoller who again prove to be on the cutting edge of today’s minimal sound. As stated in the press sheet Sascha mixes minimal with more pop oriented tracks, which shows with International Pony’s “In Our House - Papa”, emotional stuff. Isolée’s rework of Villalobos’ “What You Say…” gives the track more funk and up-tempo percussion which quite frankly suits it very well. Schatrax’ “Mispent Years” if one of those tracks where you say: “Damn, I’ve been hearing that a few times lately, loved it, but didn’t know what it was!”. What a great combination of deep basses and dreamy melodies.

The album also holds a remix of one of my favourite tracks of all time; Transformer 2’s “Pacific Symphony”. I had to look twice to see if I saw it right, but it indeed is Johan Gielen who did this great remix of this already amazing track.

Add a few other dance floor smash tracks like Louderbach’s “Grace (Anxiety)”, Henrik Schwarz, Dixon, Âme and Derrick Carter’s “Where We At” (talking about a collaboration!), Sleeparhive’s ultra deep “ACD-Voice” and the friendly closing “These Days” by Phantom Ghost and you have one hell of a compilation.

Whereas Funke’s own releases don’t really do it for me, his choice of records for this compilation earns him a lot of respect. Bpitch’s follow-up in this series is solid as a rock, which looks promising for the future!

Number 2 in the BoogyBytes series is mixed by Sascha Funke, and he did one hell of a job! Full review coming up soon...

I would rate above 5

Sleeparchive and Trentemøller's tracks sound almost same for me.
After seeing twice Sleeparchive standing behind his computer without any action, I still don't get his talent.

I cannot appreciate mix which gives impression that the dj skimps on his work after 1/3 of it.

Generally Sascha Funke rocks @ Panoramabar though!!
