Monokreck describes his style as "open minded house, from glitchy microhouse to deep techno, and all in between". Melting many styles of electronic music together to create a warm atmosphere on the dancefloor.
Last Saturday promised, according to the party agendas, to be quite a night. Knowing that Stacey Pullen would hardly start before 1 am offered a good opportunity to check out a variety of places that we hoped would serve as a pre-party for Planet Delsin in 11. Yet the reality was somewhat different. TWSTD, that had been advertised to be packed full for 2000 and One’s dj set, was practically empty till mid night. We thus headed to SugarFactory where the first edition of the new Blacktro night was taking place. Playing hard electro and serving syringes with vodka cocktails created a nice atmosphere that kept you alert and ready to dance. Had we stayed, the party would probably have proved to be one of those crowd wise smart and intelligent electro nights that are quite rare in Amsterdam.
By the time we arrived at Oosterdokskade the queue at the entrance to 11 extended till the Mediamatic project space. Positively surprising was also that the club was filled and the atmosphere and the techno crowd turned out to be really great. The highlight of the night, the set by Stacey Pullen, was a nice change from all the minimal that has been around in the past few weeks. Kicking off with “Put your hands up for Detroit” the techno and electro indeed kept the crowd with their hands up in the air for most of the time. Considering that the dj was rather reserved, in terms of contact with the audience, it was thus very surprising how well he understood and controlled the crowd that again and again simply went loco.
The concluding set by Peel Seamus, Raymon Hollander, Tim Nieburg, the men behind the Planet Delsin Detroit techno night at 11, was nevertheless somewhat disappointing. Pullen’s set had been very intense and had kept you going for 2 hours in a row, from one culmination to another without really leaving time for a break. The set by the Amsterdammers thus seemed to aim to tune it down a bit and let the audience relax. Yet by spending most of the time building tunes and keeping the audience in the expectation of an explosive culmination that never came, cleared the dance-floor quiet quickly. The loops and percussions thus mostly just left you tapping your foot and waiting, waiting, waiting …
Like for the past 3 or 4 events, it was Vj Citizen in control of the visuals. Not failing to repeatedly impress with new sets, crazy and wicked images, it was of course again a pleasure and a great visual experience. I promise next time to take a picture of the Vjs too!
Overall, it was thus a great night and an amazing opportunity to hear one of the guys who has been both influenced by and who has changed the Detroit techno scene. Having such techno nights on a monthly basis would be a very welcome initiative, because: “We want more Detroit techno!”
The new residents played really good. Raymon Hollander and Tim Nieburg both are hosts at TWSTd DJ Café and played at Rockit Open Air as well. Brent, you should not miss their next edition of Planet Delsin!
