Report

Words by: Pebee81
This was the second edition from Rockit Open-Air given at a small lake, named Maarssenveense Plassen in the centre of the Netherlands. Last year they did a very good job on their first edition with a very nice line-up, but back then it was still pretty quiet on visitors front. Rockit Open-Air as well as Free Your Mind Festival are both organised by one of the bigger organisations from Utrecht, named FCA. Both festivals have almost similar line-ups but are given on different dates in different parts of the country (Arnhem and Maarssenveen). Pretty new house-festivals, but already they conquered a spot on top in a lot of favourites lists. Not bad at all!

A very nice item about this festival is that it’s very widely set up. It’s a big area around a small lake and all the tents and podia are spread around it. This creates a lot of room and chill area’s, so a lot of small entertainment is set up on the beach, from bong smoking in small tents till play gardens and massage area’s. Perfect for a day of 27 degrees, but still the charm of this festival is mostly in the location and the beautiful line-up. I liked the combination of big and very famous artists (e.g. Derrick May, Pascal FEOS, Michael Mayer) in contrast with experimental and exclusive ones (e.g. The Remote, Alex Under, Chris Fortier).

The ambience or vibe on the festival was very wide open and friendly. A lot of people from the centre province where around off course and the festival was totally sold-out. But still there was largely enough space for everybody, the way it should be. This is still a important item that I often miss even on festivals (sorry Extrema Outdoor). Next to the room issue stands the bar issue. On Rockit Open-air there where almost no rows at bars or toilets, but there could be one or two bars extra in the area because the walk from some stages for a drink or toilet visit took about fifteen minutes. On the other hand it keeps you moving and checking off course.

But there was one item that irritated a lot of people I think and it’s a phenomenon that keeps on coming back on festivals in our country and that is high and strange priced drinks. The only option you had for consumption tickets was 9 tickets for 20,00 euro. No 10,00 or 30,00 just by 20,00 euro. Not everybody is Richie Rich, and that is something I think organisations have to keep in mind. It’s commercial off course, you have to make money and it costs a lot, but look at your festival from the eyes of your visitors and it will pay of in the end, I think. 4,40 euro for a bottle of water on a day with a feeling temperature of over 30 degrees, come on! But one thing I have to give them which is very positive and that is free refills for water (on the toilets) and free showers. But if you have to walk for 15 minutes and you have nothing to close your bottle with, people will back off and won’t take the effort. It’s that the reason for spreading the toilets this way or do we have to blame the people for being lazy? Nice discussion I think!

But I experienced the festival in total, very, very positive with smashing good sets from e.g. Pascal FEOS, Secret Cinema, The Remote, Kubus, Derrick May and Steve Rachmad. I was delighted about the music and the numerous of chill area’s and activities. The festival is gaining popularity and will grow in numbers again next year, at least that is my point of view.
A beautiful location, a nice crowd, a very strong line-up and lot of very entertaining entertainment all around a very nice lake in the centre of the Netherlands. Sounds perfect isn’t it?

Nice Festival, Nice festival ground (enough space), a kind of lame audience but maybe due to the weather. Although i had a nice day not special. Heard some real good music from alex under, Bart skills (solid as always) Only negative point, with this weather 4,5 euros for a bottle of water is a lott of money.

It was ok, heard also some great music.

Darko, Bart Skils and yeah Michael Mayer :-)

Alex Under had some nice freaky sounds but most of his music is to heavy for me.

4,5 euros for a bottle of water is a lott of money indeed!

Think this was the best festival in Holland this year! Awakenings and FYM were also nice, but Rockit has really grown into a solid festival! I had a blast! Fuck it if people are lame, you can create your own party. :-)

The prices were indeed a shame! Especially when you get a bottle of water that hasn't been in the fridge. :-(

Mathias Kaden was great again! Too bad he had bad luck with the equipment. There was playing a mix cd for about 20 minutes because one "draaitafel" was out of order. :-(

(to Mathias: "We know you couldn't help it!") icon_wink.gif

Pascal FEOS, Bart Skils, V&S de Wit, Michael Mayer Secret Cinema and Steve Rachmad were all making very nice music yesterday!

When I saw the "viskraam" on the rockit stage had been replaced for a solid stage with solid sounds, I was thrilled and my day couldn't go wrong anymore...

I also had a great day! I found it a very widely set-up festival and indeed I heard a lot of very nice music this day. Especially FEOS, Michael, The Remote, Secret Cinema, Steve Ragmad and Mister May, at least that is what I heard.

The logistics on the field where also very ok, if for example you compare it with Extrema or something. No mayor holdings and big rows. But the prices COME ON! One glass of water 2,10 euro, Expensive but ok I can take that. But 4,20 (about) for a bottle, GO AWAY!
I drank for about 30,00 euro's on water! (even without drugsicon_smile.gif

But for the rest, I had a great time and I liked the crowd. Still have to place the pictures on-line, but I will do that tomorrow!

I'd really like to hear some more comments on the "water-issue"... I've been meaning to write an article about this for quite some time now, this might be the "drop that spills the bucket" ;)

All and all a great day with nice sounds from Galluzzi, Kaden, Mayer, Ludwig and Butane. Thanks everybody for the great day (and night)!

I did it the same way indeed icon_mrgreen.gif

In the beginning I was wondering what the day would bring.. I was there early and all I saw were people with fluorecent party-clothes and groups of 'cool' boys with no shirt on and an 'houterig dansje' and already 30 beer down in an hour.. icon_rolleyes.gif

But it got better and better! Nice people, good dancingvibe and good music!
There were really different music-styles (like the kind of trance-stage at the end..? icon_confused.gif ), so all sorts of people. And it mengled ok I think.

Musical highlights: Darko Esser, Alex Under, Michael Mayer and Steve Rachmad.
Great after at the Poema as well!

A very nice festival indeed... You can count me in for next year's edition... The large festival area might be to blame for the lack of 'atmosphere' for a large part of the day, it simply took some time to fill... On the other hand, that did leave me with enough room to dance, and there were hardly any queues to be seen... I've heard great sets from Alex Under, Bart Skils, Derrick May and - definitely worth the festival ticket all by himself - Master Michael Mayer... icon_worship.gif

I think I was there as well....hahaha, no I definetly was there!
I was late because I did a nightshift before and only slept for 1/2 an hour. This wasn't a really good thing to start your festival with.
We came in when alex under was playing his last part of the set and I must say to me it was a bit dissapointing..But then again, I only heard about 15 minutes.

I didn't see very much but for me the gezelligheid was definetly the most important factor.
Had so much good laughs.

I didn't have one cold drink all day..this is shameless...especially when you ask so much for a drink...The rest of the organisation seemd fine to me!

Dancing is like therapy only better

Not very special.... I was lucky and had free entrance.. But I can imagine that if you pay 40 euro's and you have to pay 4,40 for your water.... your not happy.

It looked a bit like a free entrance festival.. I didn't like the stages.... a bit scrappy for such a entrance price

The music was plain nice.... not very special.
Only Bart his last hour was a blast!

I prefer FYM ..... no Rockit for me next year

Here´s a small video I made at the end of Ion Ludwig`s set.

and made another small vid on stage where Pascal FEOS played, when Jambi and Alex Under played the AirGuitar.

I saw different prices related to the water topic. To make it very clear (like good water): it was Eur. 4,44.

One thing I do not understand that a lot of people were so enthousiastic about Mayer's set. I met some people I know which are Mayer "fans" at different stages because they all told me it was so boring.

I did not tried it very long and walked to the next stage. Maybe the moment the flow was came into it was after a while and otherwise it's just a matter of taste and mood.

Was sagen sie!

I guess you have to love his sound to be enthousiastic about his set. I also think his style is (most of his sets) pretty boring, so I stayed at Galluzzi who was rocking the place. Best example is the "hit" Gay Burito made. You love it or you hate it, but it's a typical record Mayer would play. I think it's a dull "zaag-plaat" that doesn't go anywhere.

to PB: nice pictures you made dude!!
