Report

Words by: Luit
Awakeningsfestival is one of the main outdoor events every year. This year saw the 6th edition, with a line-up that was as promising as ever. Even Dutch weather-guru Piet Paulusma gave us a perfect weather forecast for this first Saturday of July. Awakenings festival is the only Dutch outdoor event that exclusively programmes techno music, featuring the full-range of this style. Techno-minded Holland is showing up every year to make it some sort of reunion. Last Saturday we were at the festival early to check out the festival site and get into the right mood slowly.

At eleven o’clock, the music started with Dutch talent in all four areas. The techno tent featured Wouter de Moor, who was giving the small crowd a nice warm up. This young guy – he’s only 21 - is improving his skills rapidly, and already had gigs in several countries. While Wouter was rocking the techno tent, the main stage kicked off with Dutch minimal duo David Labeij and Lauhaus. These two guys have been working the Dutch minimal scene for quite a while now and hooked on to the warm and relaxed atmosphere of the morning perfectly. It gave us a good chance to witness the opening of the fifth area of the festival, which was stationed right next to the main stage. It was suitably named the Bouncing Ballroom, and was a round silver tent filled with skippy-balls and perfect to sit, lay and bounce on or in. The music from the main stage was played inside and the whole thing had a great effect, especially on an event like this one.

The sun was shining so hot all day that dancing in the tents was quite a battle. As a result, a lot of people where dancing outside and smiling faces could be seen everywhere. At three in the afternoon, I decided to have a look in the techno tent, where the Attack People where giving away an energetic live set. Unfortunately it turned out to be so hot inside the tent that we left after 10 minutes and where completely soaking already. Later on I gave it another try with Rumenige and Loktibrada. These two Slovakian brutes did such a great job pumping their hard but subtle layered off-beats into the tent, I couldn’t help dancing until the end. The atmosphere they created was great and after 1,5 hours, I was happy they stopped so I could have a long chill in and around the minimal tent where the heat was more manageable.

Around seven it was Steve Rachmad bringing his driving tunes in area two, and from what I heard he was doing a good job. He is one of Holland’s best techno-deejays and a great warm up for my all-time favourite, Cari Lekebusch. Cari started with the wobbling bass lines and funky stabs I like him for and kept the crowd dancing their ass of for the complete 1,5 hours. Old Drumcode classics and new stuff from his own Hybrid imprint where brought with great energy and where accompanied by unexpected vocals and weird sounds which kept on surprising me. Cari’s interaction with the crowd is really special. He gets his energy from the crowd and gives it back to them, so a special synergy between both parties creates a brilliant vibe.

After Cari, I walked around the festival site passing Alexander Kowalski with his beautiful melodious live set and Joey Beltram finishing off in area 2. Adam Beyer finished the festival on the main stage in style with an explosion of fireworks, closing the 6th edition of Awakeningsfestival. A perfect sunny day filled with great techno music and nice, friendly and happy people, all together making it a day to remember.

Never thought I'd live to see the day that Richie Hawtin paled in comparison to Adam Beyer. If the two of them would enter a Twstd deejay contest, Adam Beyer would kick his ass.

Who the hell is jack anyway?

Amazing. So much better than last year (for me), awesome weather, awesome crowd and awesome music icon_smile.gif

I've been mostly at the mainstage all day, where Paul Kalkbrenner was giving one of the best sets of the day! Ended with Joey Beltram, which was also very, very nice icon_worship.gif

Looking forward to 2007 already icon_smile.gif

jeezz...

Main stage was nice although it was a bit to minimal somethimes.. Richie Hawtin caught my attention with some wicked records, but didn't played his best set in my opinion. Villalobos wasn't special for me too. But I didn't mind though, cause I was just enjoying this wonderfull day icon_smile.gif Unfortunately there were no fire fighters spinkling us with some water this time...

The highlight for me was also Joey Beltram. He finished this great day with some powerfull techno beats. Still loving the classic tunes from this pioneer icon_clap.gif

Had a perfect day; the weather, main stage, all those beautiful girls and water for only 1 coupon... Think this was one of the best awfs I have been so far!
Read a lot of negative reactions on Villa's set.. I think it was a great set (that rmx from depeche mode always does it!) In the future more mnml on main ;)
Today studying, so too bad.. no love family park for me icon_sad.gif

Anyway, awfs definitly 5 out of 5 stars icon_wink.gif

Only stage I saw was the small electro and minimal stage. Check some pictures on:

As soon as my body and mind are both awake I'll write some more.

what an amazing hot day!!!

Lekebusch and Beyer rocked really hard. Every time when i'm hearing Cari, I think to myself "watnou minimal", jeez!

Hawtin dissapointed me, only the end of his set was nice with a good crowd and a good vibe.

And most of the time i was chilling under the threes and heared at the background nice tunes from the minimal stage.

Ow and I will not forget Ion Ludwig, opened the minimal stage with a nice liveset.

It's a lovelee dae...

Nice weather, nice crowd, nice music, a lot of great things!!!! It was an amazing day.....

My highlight of the day was defenitely Anja Schneider! icon_clap.gif

Love her sound.....

At area 2 there was a lot of great techno going on, too bad the sound was so bad. Area 1 had a good sound system with speakers at the back of the tent also, something I missed in area 2. Otherwise the sets of GAYLE, Rachmad, Lekebusch, INIGO and BELTRAM were the fucking BOMB! Now they were just very good. icon_rasta.gif

At area 1 Dj Agent surprised me....

Hawtin was ok, but not great at the main, SKILS, PAUL and BEYER were!!!

But again, a very good day and ANJA ROCKED!!!

YES I had a great day and NO it was not because of the music... I had fun with Ritchie though I thought it was way too monotone from time to time, Villa didn't capture my attention, Steve did... but it was too damn hot inside and the same story goes for Cari icon_clap.gif

Luckily Paul Kalkbrenner with his pumpy trancy sound stirred things up around mainstage so I had another good reason to hang around there. Friends, beer and joints were 3 other good reasons icon_biggrin.gif

Bart Skils wasn't as strong as I am used to but whatever. Around the time Beyer started I left... too bad cos Beyer and Joey Beltram were the highlights of the day I heard.
icon_sad.gif

Well... at least I had some luv icon_cool.gif

Til next year... with some more uptempo sounds @ main pleezz!
