Report

Words by: TR-909
A night called Static... It's asking for it. Even though there was one hell of a queue downstairs. The people upstairs were... Well... Static.

There was a lot of chatting & talking going on on the dance floor.
I guess it's going out 'new style'. No more screaming and shouting like in the old days, just having a 'gezellige avond' is what counts.

During the course of the evening people did seem to warm up to the minimal sounds of Makcim. Of course an opening set cannot be expected to be the fastest & loudest of the evening…
Matt John didn't quite fulfill the expectations created by the stories I had heard about his set at the panorama bar... It was a bit tame. Still everybody seemed to be enjoying themselves. The VJ was giving the crowd some, at times, disturbing visuals; babies sucking on nipples with their tongue flicking in and out of their mouth, a guy making weird faces and perhaps a little less shocking; more children and babies doing stuff and dancing people but because of the sheer size of the screens it really has an impact at 11. Too bad I saw lots of visuals I had seen before…

But for me the party didn't really start until Bart Skils took the stage. It was clear from the beginning of his set that he is gaining momentum as Amsterdam’s finest dj. The crowd welcomed him with an overdose of enthusiasm. Almost un-minimal like...
Bart slowly but firmly pushed the throttle, speeding things up in his own special style. This was exactly what this party needed, some balls. After a while it didn't even feel like I was at the same party I had walked into earlier that night. And I don't think it was the alcohol and other commonly used substances that caused the change in atmosphere in the club. Bart's set made the evening into a worthwhile one. And I think lots of people will agree with this.

Unfortunately I didn't make it to the after party (which is nearly always held after Bart’s parties) so I cannot comment on it, but if Bart kept his groove going like he was in the final hour at Static.... It must have been one hell of a party!

Verdict: 7/10

didnt like it that much
i think the crowd was more a "cafe" crowd then dancing ppl
most of the ppl during matt john where either walking (to) much around or talking each other.
when bart skills started the public went insane for 5 minutes starts to dance good and 5 min later its gone.
sometimes i had the idea that just had to show a big message on the screen like ppl plz dance
i think its a missed change such a good line up and location

Well I liked the evening..
I just stepped into the 11 when Matt John started.
He was oke but think I like his productions more than his dj skills.
But Bart did really a good job! Nice records, good balance, just a great set!

The only thing about the 11: the dance floor.. Why putting the blocks in the middle on the dance floor and not a bit more to the end?? They take to much room, and u have the feeling that the dance floor is quit small.. And it looks like there aren’t that many people dancing, will I think there were actually lot’s of people dancing in according to other nights I have been there..

To be honest: Club 11 and minimal music and people who dance..
Sometimes it’s almost a contradiction in terminus..

Ik had a grrreat time! Good music, good vibe, and I danced ánd chitchatted on the dancefloor, it's a superb combination. People should try it instead of whining so much.

so why is the soundsystem lousy Acqua?
what makes you such an expert? I think it's one of the
best systems in town considering the acoustic problems of the room and the fact that every club in Amsterdam has a soundlimit due to regulations.

I think people that complain about too much chatting on the dancefloor are too busy with other people instead of letting go. You're probably the same people that spend all your time chatting on forums instead of dancing your ass off.
People make the party, so make a move!

You're completely right.. that sounded far to arrogant...
I'm not an expert.. but I've seen quite some clubs from the inside. Clubs who are using F1 as well.
But maybe you're right, and is this the best you can make of it in this space (Since there no money for good isolation because they're only open so shortly).
On the other hand, I've been working in the Pacha hotel (Ibiza) at a Campari party. I've seen the guys of MTV soundsystem putting down a F1 soundsystem in one afternoon in the loge of the hotel... and to be honest.. it blew everybody away.
The good thing about it was that you didn't hear the bass.. but you could feel it. The music was taking over your body, but in the same time you could still have a conversation.
Finally I have to dissapoint you.. I did dance my ass off!!! And I did have a great time. I've already accepted the fact that it doesn't sound that great over there.. but still these parties are one of Amsterdams best if you ask me.

well, you're right that F1 can sound better in a smaller room like Jimmy Woo or a hotel lobby. But at 11 there is a soundlimit, and especially in the low end, as these are the frequencies that cause problems with the neighbours. And inspite of what people might think, 11 does have neighbours that have complained many times before. So in order to stay alive, F1 had to inplement the soundsystem as it is now. And I think it's working very well, although both Matt John and Bart Skils were playing into the limiter quite a few times, causing the whole volume to be lower than it could be.

I agree Linde, and for sure did my dance on the dance floor..
But if you compare the 11 to other places, the 11 is a place that people seem like to prefer chatting in stead of dancing..

actually, I don't think this is something typical of 11. It happens everywhere, but in most places there are different types of soundsystems, where you can often not hear eachother. Personnally, I go out to listen to music, dance and ofcourse also to meet and talk. if I can do all three and still be heard by my friends, that's a plus!
most other soundsystems are so deafening and harsh on the ears, it's no joy to either dance or talk. It's also the thing that F1 is famous for: a great high definition sound but you can still hear eachother on the dancefloor.
