Monokreck describes his style as "open minded house, from glitchy microhouse to deep techno, and all in between". Melting many styles of electronic music together to create a warm atmosphere on the dancefloor.
Divided in three colours this years edition was already number 17 of the Time Warp’ held in Mannheim at the Maimarkthalle. The location was last year probably the last time, but also this year it could take place over in Mannheim.
For my self it was for the first time I went to an edition of Time Warp and I was amazed about the whole trip with our touring car, we arrived at +- ten o’clock, unfortunately without a good working air-conditioning, but the whole trip was already a good laugh.
Once we were inside I already had a briefing in my hand with the announcement that the Wighnomy Brothers were not coming, because one of the guys had terrible problems with his teeth and needed his rest. A little disappointment, but there were a lot of other acts and dj’s on the program so we went inside the Maimarkthalle and walked around just to see how it looked like and where we could find the different floors.
There were three floors in different colours blue, green and red. Blue stands for; mobility and movement but also for depth and space which define all characteristics of electronic music. The colour green emphasizes the effect of art as an unlimited platform of creativity and permanent evolution. The red colour was the colour of Time Warps Label Camp. This colour stands for energy and flow, beginning and end, idea and success.
The biggest Hall was divided in two floors and it surprised me that the sound wasn’t going through the curtains or thin wall that was in the middle of the area. The sound was something I found really awesome! In Germany you can get a nice impression how sounds can be heard very hard but also very pure and clear.
Felipe was playing and was being replaced at the time by Monika Kruse, a techno dj who plays a lot of tech-house sets this year and is very busy with her label Terminal M and electric avenue recordings.
Then there was dj Hell at the wheels of steel and this man is a real surprise for me, I’ve didn’t heard him for a few years and was very glad that I could see him play again, I will subscribe his set as perfectly, it was a musical set with snatches of dark house, industrial electronic body music, acid, filmic soundscapes, electro, punk, disco and a menacing undertow of noire electronique where the paranoia seeps through the circuits. (For me one of the highlight of TW)
Someone I wanted to see at floor 2 was Dave Clarke and I can’t make an impression of his set, because I’ve only seen the last fifteen minutes or so, what I’ve heard he went really crazy and a lot of people that I’ve spoken to were touched by this man again.
Dj Rush started in the same area and began his set with a very high bpm with a lot of records of Kvitta, Viper xxl and Wittekind. Personally I went really crazy on the remix of Tiga with I wear my sunglasses at night. Rush plays how he feels and looks what the crowds wants, most of his sets that I’ve heard in Germany were rougher than in Holland.
The sad thing for me was I had a banging headache after the set from the major and I really searched for almost one hour for a painkiller, but no one of the organisation could give me any and the first aid wasn’t allowed to give any medicines. Very disappointing and I was not happy about that. After again a half hour I had a painkiller from one of the people that was also on my bus, this was really a relief. (Thanks Jasper!)
To get into the party again we went to Koze for a while, this man was making the crowd wild over at the third floor, the same floor where Ricardo Villalobos and Toni Rios were going to perform. His records were very heavy and minimal, the people who were there were really enjoying his set and went really crazy.
Quickly we were fired up again and we went to floor one for the last half hour (eventually 15 minutes) of Chris Liebing. To me personally he didn’t make a big impression, I heard good techno, but to me it wasn’t very special, but I’ve heard only 15 minutes so……
After Chris it was time for Mauro Picotto and I decided to listen to his set and was amazed by what he was playing, a lot of gatex kind of records, a lot of melody in it. After an hour or so I lost him a little.
At Time warp there was techno, techno for everyone, from minimal to hard techno and there was a fusion with al the styles. A lot of happy people, good facilities, great lasers (especially in floor one) nice chill out and a lot of things to eat, to do (brainmachine) and to buy! (clothes, music, rings etc.)
The only thing I personally can’t get used to is the deposit system of the drinks, it keeps the ground clean, that’s good, but I don’t want to go back to the bar after I’ve finished my drink. The other possibility is that I keep the cup in my hand, but I don’t like that either, so I’ve thrown about 30 euro on the floor. :(
After Mauro Picotto we went to Ritchie Hawtin who made a very special set with his dj skills, he made it happen again with his pure minimal and great taste of techno in a journey through space he let the crowd go wild in a set that began at a quarter past six in the morning until one o’clock in the evening! Ricardo Villalobos joined forces at, I think, half past ten en together they went further in Time, it was really a warp! When my time was at half past twelve we went to the touring car to prepare ourselves at the way back home. (I’ve heard they went on until five o’clock)
I’ve had a great weekend over in Mannheim and would thank Beee for the great trip to Time Warp. Met a lot of nice people and the party was one to remember. Check the photo’s here at beatfreax! (and I’m sorry if my English isn’t very well.)
As usual this year Timewarp rocked big asses! With an awesome RJ night in our legs and 2 hours of dramatic sleep we stepped in the Maimarkthalle around 11 o'clock. Monika Kruse was playing some toytechno at floor 2, pretty boring. After Kruse dj Hell started with some electroclash set. I Heard a few nice records but the most was terrible stuff, tegenvallertje dus. Entering floor 3 Mogwai was doeing pretty well. The first real good sounds where coming from Koze who played a enormous dark deep minimalset, at the small floor, very nice records especially the intro! After Koze my friend karotte began to spin some amazing music, original Karotte records and the freakshow was complete, crowd going crazy! Amazing hours at floor 3! The mornighours where rocked again by master Hawtin. After 11 hours of pumping electronic misery the day before RH pulled again 5 hours of clashing drum rhythms, bonebraking basslines and earbleeding synth distortions throug my throat while recording the upcoming Plastikman dvd. Same as last year, legendary awesome set!!! Seen Karotte around the booth? Haha you crazy guy...... Sad that I didn't visit the Warp showcase because [by telling] it was located in an other building, accesable by a pendelbus, very strange........
yes yes...what an amazing party! Koze was doing very well, but the absolute best of the party was hawtin, who was later joined by villalobos. The party was still going on very well then Nice athomsphere, and met a lot of nice people...First timewarp for me, but i hope not the last one, it hit the spot!
Let me explain to you just what i mean, let me teach y'all a lesson 'bout this drummachine!
Terrible party that Timewarp, particularly the last 7 hours, of Hawtin ofcourse! Hell I never had really got, found it, however, refreshing what he let hear, no average sound. Koze were also cool! Karotte are an idiot, both on floor 3 and 2.
Damn. Hawtin! This man rockt! 7 hours were in fact still too short. Can get of it none enough. Also the last hours with Villalobos were okay.
Bus travel top regulated! Kitty and Bas-jan thanks!

No worries dude, Nobody's perfect.. (well.. I guess Jordi is)
We all understand what you're trying to say. Thanks for sharing your Timewarp experiences with us....

I'm not perfect, but Babelfish translations just suck. (en dat maakt het erg grappig om te lezen)

My first Time Warp was amazing!! After hearing all the great stories from last year, the expectations were very high! When the timetable was published and I saw that "The king of long sets" Richie Hawtin was planned for almost 7 hours, the expectations reached even higher!
We had a very pleasant bus-trip (even though the weather was so nice I'd rather be on a terrace than in a bus) arranged by Kitty and Bas-Jan who did a great job! Arriving at the venue at about half past 10, we started slow, chilled a little, and then went inside the maimarkthalle! The first thing that we noticed was the booming sound system like I never heard before! This is how techno should be heard! every bass kicked in like the big bang must have sounded about 15 billion years ago!
With this sound system, every record sounded better!
In my mind I have devided Timewarp in two parts: before Hawtin and during Hawtin... Before Hawtin I had a great party, liked the 'different' sound of DJ Hell, enjoyed DJ Koze and Karotte, had a lot of fun and drinks and stayed amazed about the sound system. But then when the clock reached 6.15 and we went to Floor 2 to see Hawtin, Timewarp got the magic everybody had been talking about... This man (or should I say hero, genious, magician, ...) proved again that he is ways ahead and knows how to lay hold of an audience and keep them for 7 hours! Most records I'd never heard before, and the ones I did know sounded completly different and were mixed in such way they sounded new also.... Every time when you thought "Jeeeeeeeezus what is he doing!!! This is crazy! I never heard anything like this! This CAN'T get any better" it just did.... Words can't describe music, but the people who were there know what I mean...
For the last hours, one of Hawtin's best friends, Ricardo Villalobos teamed up. They had a lot of fun and kept playing great. The last hour or longer, they weren't playing any more records, but they played loops, basslines and samples directly from their laptops. The Hawtin and Villalobos live performance, that appeared on some summer festival line-ups already, was crazy! If you get the chance this summer, go check it out!
After 7 hours, Hawtin finished with a great track, throwing his hand in the air, applauding for the audience and thanking them. People in the audience (E-tjuh ) dropped to their knies to thank him... Everybody agreed: this was the top-of-the-top and we witnessed something unique! When we turned around to walk back to the bus, Richie threw in another record: House Nation! We turned 180 degrees back and jumped our last energy out of our bodies.... :worhship:
Timewarp had an official after at Floor 3, but after 14 hours, we were done partying and got in the bus that drove us home safely...
I've also really enjoyed my first Time Warp!
We went by car to Utrecht, and from there we went to Mannheim by bus (normally not a big problem, but when the airco refuses to work at a nice sunny day it really is!).
When we arrived at the Maimarkthalle at about 10.30pm, the party was already started. There were quite a few partypeople over there..probably because it started at 7pm!!
When I visited Area 1, I noticed the sound was very hard, but at the same time very clear!! nice nice nice....at the other areas the same story
I heard Koze for the second time (last year @ Soulcialism) and i liked what i heard again! nice set.
Moguai surprised me with his set...which was kinda funky at some points, really liked it!
Ofcourse Villalobos did a nice job again...but the biggest one of the evening was Richie Hawtin, without a doubt!
Last Time-warp was quite ok. I liked the sets of Leila abu-el-rub, Hell and Pascal FEOS who played semi live I think. Karotte played a wicked set at the house floor and really rocked! Sven won my love back that I had lost for a while. I was hoping for a hard set with typical Vath records. He didn’t play hard at all but I still dinged it very much and it had the vath touch.
Sven Vath in Germany is so differed than in Holland or Belgium. From the moment the crowd saw his face the place wend mad and with mad I mean really mad. Everyone putted their hands in the air and started to scream. He started his first record and BOOM the madness exploded, chicken pocks everywhere!
The man who made this time-warp was Hawtin. In the 8 years I go to parties and listen to house music this was absolutely the best set I ever heard. Richie still keeps developing himself and his approach of techno music is just out of category. The music he blew trough the speakers just grabbed you and made every part in your body wane move.
Wicked and freaky sounds with rolling bass lines kept coming until it reached a point where I thought it just can’t get any better but I was wrong it got better! When Ricardo teamed up with Richie and another power book hit the dj-booth magic came out of the speakers. After a while there wasn’t any record spinning it just were loops, clicks, bleeps and bass lines that came out of the machinery. So we got an exclusive Plastikman vs. Villalobos live set!
Musically spoken it was an amazing Time-warp but I didn’t like the atmosphere in the morning. Germans forget to smile when they are on drugs and live too much in their own world. It’s something I only experience at the bigger parties…
I don’t know if I go back next year. I like the atmosphere more at smaller venues, I’m getting old I guess.
jouw huisbelg! * ENGLISH PLEASE* your home belgian guy!
Timewarp was really great. Was already at 21.00 inside, the music on that time sucked. Monika Kruse was playing terrible stuff. But I was amased by the incredible sound syste
