Steven P's interest in electronic dance music started to grow at the tender age of ten. Heavily influenced by the older kids in his neighbourhood, who were already into mixing house records, he bought his first set of turntables when he was only twelve years of age. This early start clearly gave him a certain advantage. Starting out like most young DJ's, Steven P began playing at school events and local parties. It didn't take long before he started playing for larger crowds on a regular basis. For instance, he was one of the resident DJ's at a Rotterdam based after party club at the age of seventeen.
The last couple of years Steven P's face has become a regular sight in the Rotterdam club scene; gradually requests started coming in for him to play in venues outside of Rotterdam, and especially last year has been quite busy. With gigs virtually each weekend, in every corner of the country, he is in ever growing demand.
Although it's hard to stick a certain label to his sound, it can be best described as deep-, and minimal house with a soulful twist. However, depending on the circumstances he is also known to play afro- and break beat. One of his key features is definitely the way he brings a certain warmth and a positive vibe to the dance floor. The way he makes intelligent grooves accessible to his audience fits well with the likes of Michael Mayer (Kompakt) and Deepmix Moscow DJ’s B-Voice and Helga.
Steven P: “When I play, one of my aims is to see everyone smiling: I think it's a DJ's main job to make sure everybody is having a good time. Furthermore I try to play records that don't lie in the line of expectation. There is too much quality house music that is not getting the attention it deserves. Besides that, keeping it original is very important to me.”
Currently Steven P co-hosts two monthly party’s. With “Je weet toch!” and “Rehab”, he and his partner in crime Khalil provide a platform for contemporary electronic music. They are also involved in the “Community” project, a collaboration between four young organisations from the city of Rotterdam who focus on deep- and minimal house music.
On a shorter notice: this very enthusiastic and highly motivated youngster is definitely a “one to watch” for the future!
