Artist: primal scream

Glasgow's Primal Scream have genre-hopped with such alarming frequency, they almost seem like a band you'd hire to play at your wedding or Bar Mitzvah. Since their inception in 1984, they've shifted from flaky hippie-jangle to leather-clad delinquent punk to ambient-dub to Southern-fried classic rock--all with varying degrees of success. Though Primal Scream's more convincing efforts prove their skills in both the rock and dance genres, they always shine brightest (and scream loudest) when they manage to seamlessly merge the two.

Primal Scream formed when singer/mastermind Bobby Gillespie was still drumming for the Jesus & Mary Chain. They released four U.K. singles before delivering their full-length debut in 1987, the icky, feeble, paisley-and-daisies LP entitled--get this--Sonic Flower Groove. Two years later they switched gears dramatically for the far superior Primal Scream, a Detroit-style rocker with vicious slash-&-burn guitars unpredictably offset by Beach Boys-esque backup vocals and Gillespie's wimpy cooing. Then, with those two false starts safely out-of-print, in 1991 Primal Scream reinvented itself yet again; producer/DJ Andy Weatherall got hold of the Primal Scream album track "I'm Losing More Than I'll Ever Have," forced it through a sampler, and came up with the now-classic dance track "Loaded," thus inspiring Primal Scream's crowning achievement, Screamadelica. Unfortunately, the fervent dance audience that this jaw-dropping album attracted was sorely disappointed when three years later Primal Scream made a retro wardrobe change, this time morphing into a cut-rate Black Crowes with the Memphis-flavored Give Out But Don't Give Up. Luckily, Primal Scream didn't give up, instead wisely returning to dance-groove in 1996 with a slow, slippery instrumental on the Trainspotting soundtrack; they also collaborated with dub guru Adrian Sherwood on the single "The Big Man And The Scream Team Meet The Barmy Army Uptown." Now, in 1997, their hypnotic new album Vanishing Point is perfectly-timed with the so-called "electronica revolution"--which has finally caught up to what Primal Scream were doing back in 1991.

As far as the (existing) Primal Scream discography goes, Screamadelica--an intensely narcotic, libidinous liquefaction of rock 'n' roll, gospel, disco and psychedelia that owes as much to the Rolling Stones and the Yardbirds as it does to the Orb and Jah Wobble--is most essential. Vanishing Point, though not as supreme as Screamadelica (though of course, we've heard this type of thing so much since Screamadelica first came out), is also groovy, but Give Out But Don't Give Up is a total throwaway. However, if you ever stumble upon a rare copy of Primal Scream, by all means buy it...and then send it to me!
