Monokreck describes his style as "open minded house, from glitchy microhouse to deep techno, and all in between". Melting many styles of electronic music together to create a warm atmosphere on the dancefloor.
Two boys in the sand box, that's the mother of all friendship between men. Let's fast forward to the image of two tree-sized guys lying drunk on the californian beach. Resting on their elbows they step on the full moon with their oversized shoes. "Moon boots", they grin. And now they remember why they are looking forward to returning home. The Moonbootique has opened.
That's been at the turn of the millennium. Just a few days earlier, coincidence took a good step on their feet and brought them a night of surprises. Originally, DJ Koze was supposed to DJ in the Golden Pudel club, but he wasn't there. KoweSix, Tobitob and six house records were. And an audience who's so very prepared to freak out it could have easily scared dutch hooligans. Just the right mixture for a landslide.
Back to Hamburg, KoweSix and Tobitob started working on their moon vision's realisation. A club night, a label, a producer's team - the Moonbootique shall offer all of that. KoweSix takes his dog on a walk and talks to people, just like he always does. He learns that it's hard the local club scene is strongly categorized towards as homogeneous target audiences as possible. And that newcomers who refuse to commit to any particular music style are having a hard time to become accepted. But he manages to find a place. The club night is now called Moonbootica and happens once a month in the Hafenklang. Aside from the squatted Rote Zora, the club in the ancient demolition-threatened house at St. Pauli's harbor border is the most active place for Hamburg's underground society. Anything goes, from Punk to Jungle, from Gabber to Glam Rock, as long as the attitude is right and the music appreciation is founded. A bottle of beer doesn't cost two Euros, the walls are naked, and there's the smell of grass and a hundred years without ventilation. It's not the place for chit chat and catwalk clubbing. Partying there is not for the ambience but for the real pleasure: loud music and lots of basses. Dancing helps.
Moonbootica are spinning the records they like. Tobitob and KoweSix take their turns, record by record. Most of the time they push the straight beat. There's pellmell on the turntables. Electronic rank growth, snotty sound to pinch the ears until it's got undiverted attention. Snotty because Moonbootica don't hesitate to dig into the garbage can as a means of showing that everything's got its chocolate side. Crap House. Taxi Techno. Everything becomes Disco. It starts on the fence, so nobody gets the opportunity to sit down. Moonbootica is as touting as the urge to trespass. Head first, body next. No debating about electronic music but applied physics. You can see no boundaries from the moon.
Meanwhile, at least 400 people are pilgrimating to the Moonbootica. The name got around. The word in Hamburg is: The only real party - not a club evening, not a live act, not going out. KoweSix and Tobitob are inviting friends. Koze comes, DJ Coolmann, Stachy, DJ Phono, Arj Snoek, Tobi Neumann, Karotte, M.A.N.D.Y., Sven Dohse, too. The Hafenklang is closed due to renovations. "The Moonbootica" is moving into the Technokaufhaus Nobistor, the third floor harbors the Echochamber. At midnight, the waiting line of freaks, workmen, PR-consultants and sole proprietors leads from the roof out to the street. Moonbootica hasn't got a target group. Moonbootica is the target group. One floor below them there's the evening with that hip Berlin label. Their bouncers are yawning.
Now, KoweSix and Tobitob are touring Disco Germany. Tribehouse, Neuss, Funky Chicken Club Köln, POLAR tv Berlin, Electro Osho Göttingen, U 60311 Frankfurt, GIG Hannover, BREAD & butter Köln, Butan Club Wuppertal, Hotel Reiss Kassel, Kerosin Augsburg, Tiefenrausch Köln, Sumo Club Marburg, Blau Saarbrücken, H-de-M Hannover, Sensor Club Cologne, Joue Joue Erfurt, Prinzip Munich, Airport Würzburg, and out there Nature One, N.O.M.A.D., Sonne, Mond, Sterne 2002 & 2003, Lovefield, Stammheim Open Air, Liberty One... The moon shines everywhere.
The calm times are over, that's for sure. The Moonbootique not only is a full-time job, but it also employs a producer's team. The own label gets its kick-off. The first 12" - "Get it on" - keeps itself in the DCC Club Charts's top ten for weeks. Tobitoob and KoweSix are entering the remix business. People seem to be waiting in line here, too. They range from Luomo and the Boogie Pimps to Skin and Panjabi MC, 15 remixes up to now. With their production technique it's the same as with their parties: no manicure, let's keep the dirt of a dancing night under the fingernails. Nominated for "discovery of the year" at the German Dance Awards 2003. Nominated for the EinsLive crown as "Best DJ". Now the music industy majors are knocking and throwing a bag of money on the table. Money has no value on the moon. Moonbootica is concerned with their evolvment, so they decide in favor of an indie partner. They sign a record deal with Kontor Records, guaranteed 100% artist freedom for Moonbootica and Moonbootique. "We really like that", says KoweSix and returns to the studio where TobiTob is laying the basses for their new 12" - "We 1 2 Rock" a little deeper. Afterwards they call up Lodown in Berlin to give him the green light for the Record on Moonbootique Records. As the Egoexpress song goes: "Man muss immer weiter durchbrechen" - "You gotta break through, on and on". Which is a Hamburg specialty.
