This led him to winning several prestigious awards from within the industry, (including B.V. Pop Prize 1997, N.P.S Cultural Award 1996 and The Silver Harp, Edison 1997).
As a composer Eboman (Jeroen Hofs born 1973) has been active since the early 80’s as a sample and remix enthousiast. As audio sample technology matured also Ebomans audio compositions matured. But Ebomans field of development is not only focussed on audio, in contrary, the visual side of his compositions has always played an important role in his compositions. In the eighty’s that was limited to simple animations and mixing samples from different movies through the audio mixes, but since 1991, when he started his studies on the Utrecht school of arts faculty Image and media technology (graduated cum laude in 1996), he could invest more time in the visual side of the Sample madnesS concept. The first actual audio visual Sample madnesS composition was created in 1993, a bumper for local teLevision station Mo’tv. At this time Eboman also had his first club hit with a track called ‘Run into jazz’, samples from this composition were later used in the Eboman Sample madnesS classic ‘Garbitch’.
Eboman started performing in 1995. When Eboman started performing it was an instant hit. At this time electronic performances where very static, but when Eboman performed the stage exploded with the energy of him and the guests joining him on stage. Equipment fell from the table, people where jumping around, hectic ruff audio tracks challanged the audience to dance and to do ehr… yeah whatever.
Another revoLution Eboman introduced with his live performance concepts was the introduction of using live video sampling on stage. Since the end of 1995 the Eboman live crew incLuded a cameraman, a Video Sample madhead, a scratch DJ, a variety of guests playing guitar, saxophone, mc-ing etc. and ofcourse Eboman himself. Tracks like ‘Garbitch’, ‘Continew’, ‘Donuts with Buddah (video mix)’, ‘Video trash’, ‘video punx’, ‘Longstix’, ‘Samira’, ‘Bounce to disS’, ‘Sick’n’tired’, ‘NothingZz gonna stop d Ebo’ rocked the crowd musically AND visually with Ebo’s sync audio visual Sample madnesS styLe. Eboman took his style a step further in august 1996 doing an AV SamplemadnesS interview with Chris Cunningham, broadcasted on dutch television.
Early 1996 the E.P. ‘Donuts with Buddah’ was released. Combined with the dynamic, unique, innovative live set, Eboman and his crew made a gigantic impact on the dutch, and later european an japanese electronic music scene. This resulted in Eboman winning multiple prizes in Holland (among which, BV Pop PriZze, NPS Cultural Award, Edison/Silver Harp, different dance music awardZz), an invitaton to tour with the Prodigy through England and Germany (which he did in august and november of 1996) and hitting the top 20 with ‘Donuts with Buddah’ and being eLected best dutch song of 1996 by the dutch VPRO audience.
In 1997 Eboman created his first Audio Visual SampLe madnesS movie ‘Fort Ebo Gold’. A 40 minute spagetti western sampLe piece. The premiere of this movie was at the LowLands festival 1997. On a hot summer afternoon over 6000 visitors witnessed a spectacLe consisting of a stereo video presentation (one screen on stage, another in the back of the venue behind the audience) making dialogues and bullits flying over the audiences heads, massive décor, rotating video screens on the ceiling, live video sampling, live video scratching, topped of with a sample madley of phat Ebo tunes.
In 1998 Eboman produced the last of the Sample madnesS audio visual album trilogy (‘Sample madnesS’ (1995), ‘From the Ebo sTaTion’ (1996), ‘meet_me@samplemadness.net’ (199). Including ‘Droppin’ EbombZz’, ‘Trap to skiLL you’, ‘Floppy diskKo’, ‘goTTo goTTo’, ’98 remixes of Garbitch and Sick’n’tired’ and lots of more classic madnesS.
Inspired by the synchronized audio visual effects soLos of, for example, ‘Garbitch ’98’ and ‘GoTTo GoTTo’ and the more hectic video rhythms created for the ‘FreestyLe video riddim’ album. Eboman produced in 1999 his second movie : ‘d driVer must be a MadMaN’. A 60 minute 3 screen 180 degree audio visual Sample madnesS masterpiece. Is it a movie? Is it music? Is it a live performance? Is it a bird? It’s … Sample madnesS.
This turned out to be a very succesfull project and has been presented all over the world and is still a one of it’s kind experience. Techniques developed for the production of ‘d driVer must be a MadMaN’ resulted also in the creation of the ‘frame skrtZz technique’ used on the ‘Eboman BeatZz ‘n’ BreakZz’ album and later for the ‘Eboman digitaL audio skrtZz worLd champion’ and the ‘Eboman digitaL audio visuaL skrtZz worLd champion’ albumZz.
Thanks to new technological developments, using video sampling in a live performance became more and more flexible. In 2000 this resulted in new experimental audiovisuaL Sample madnesS live compositions (containment, recombinant docu, saiL2000) and the development of the skrtZz int_R_face.
The ‘skrtZz int_R_face’ is technology created by Eboman and his crew to be able to manipulate audio visual samples more flexible live on stage. The Movements of Ebos arms are used by laptops to process the images and sounds while Ebo can select the different audio visual samples with his feet pressing buttons on the floor. These buttons are also used to tapdance video beats, on top of wihich Ebo can than skrtZz the samples with his arms. A total of three audiovisual layers can be controlled at the same time in this way (two by moving the arms, one by tapdancing).
In 2000 Eboman also started performing with the DVJ 1.0 concept. Eboman as DJ and VJ for the new millenium, Remixing MTV pop Kitch videos with underground dance music into audio visual dancefloor madnesS.
Next to performing with the ‘skrtZz int_R_face’ and as DVJ Eboman participated in different projects during 2000, 2001 and 2002. From doing music videos for dutch supergroups BLøf and DoeMaar, to creating virtual characters and audiovisuals for Theater group Suver Nuver, to doing special performances for special events (including NEA awards, SaiL), to creating an interactive audio visual setup for the Volharding orchestra.
Since 2002 Eboman has also developed several interactive audio visual pieces, including the skrtZz cube, Linkwood, Garbitch interactive RMX and now the ‘Grand theft Audio’ Sample madnesS DVJ 2.0 game.
Now Eboman is working on :
- the first part of ‘Ebomans non-lineair album release’ : a selection of Sample madtrackZz on an audio and data cd.
- ‘DVJ 2.0 : Grand theft audio’ : 3d sample madnesS game and live set
- ‘interface band’ : 4 – 5 people on stage creating realtime audio visual sample madness, to premiere on the Festival a/d Werf, may 2004.
- ‘DVJ 3.0 : oh no the 80Zz r back!’ : 80’s music videos in the mix
- ‘Trap to skiLL you’ : Martial artZz madnesS, reLease date t.b.a.
- ‘Eboman d realtime audio visual skrtZz world champion’ : Eboman skrtZzin’ with his new developed skrtZz-pen over New York-video beatZz and digitally enhanced MC-ing.
