Julien Chaptal is one of the newcomers of the current world dictating Amsterdam underground scene.Among the likes of Kabale und Liebe & Daniel Sanchez with there smash club killer "Mumbling Yeah" and Anton Pieete & Bart Skils with there current club killer "Handsome", Julien Chaptal launches his debut album Tokens on Dutch international dj/producer 2000 and One's Remote Area imprint, as the first to appear with an album.
The beautiful collection of tracks on ‘Tokens’ is the best proof that Chaptal is one of the finest talents Amsterdam has to offer. The grooves are housey, deep and funky, the subtle melodies fresh and uplifting. Several tracks can cause severe damage on the dance floor, as already was proven by the happy few that were able to play them in front of a crowd, like Remote Area labelboss Dylan Hermelijn (2000 and One).
On Chaptal’s debut album ‘Tokens’, he teams up with some of his friends, like Daniel ‘mumbling’ Sanchez and Carlos ‘screaming’ Valdes. Compared to other new Minimal-, Techno- and House-producers in Amsterdam, Chaptal’s sound is definitely different. He stands out from the rest not only because he still doesn’t really speak the native language (who does in this international city?), but also because his music breathes his musical roots: the French House that dominated Dance music and especially his hometown Paris, in the second part of the nineties.
Chaptal had his first break with his own group Le Clic, which so far only released one 12-inch, but became a popular live-act in the Netherlands. The trio played on the main stage of the Amsterdam Welcome to the Future-festival in the summer of 2007, where Chaptal actually could be seen twice. So next to some solo-releases (the beautiful melodic ‘Wonderland’ (December 2006) and it’s follow up ‘Am I loco lima’) Chaptal also produced a 12-inch with Lauhaus ‘Freedom fries’, Lauhaus & Chaptal), which became a solid international club hit.
Tokens is a true example of what is currently happening in the Amsterdam underground club scene. A complete melt down of the traditional four to the floor sound from stripped Techno Balkafono to yet uplifting Housey Cocotte Minute. Tokens provides the variety of Amsterdam underground Dance music. Like all the plastic money the dj-producer collected on his endless journeys through nightlife, which has been depicted on the cover.
Also as a mixed collection ‘Tokens’ is a great album, because the music not only works on the dancefloor, but also in the chill out environment of your own home. These tracks show the way French house should have been going on. ‘Tokens’ is the best proof that French house is still alive and well living in Amsterdam.
