News: villalobos, oswald and loderbauer compose together

Villalobos, Oswald and Loderbauer compose together World Premiere: Ricardo Villalobos, Moritz von
Oswald and Max Loderbauer Compose and Perform A
New Score for Silent Film Classic “Berlin - Sinfonie
der Großstadt”

Mannheim, February 2008: From 29 March up until the huge final event on 5 April in Mannheim’s Maimarkthalle, all eyes will be on various venues in and around Mannheim as they present some of today’s most exciting highlights from the crossroads between sound, images and vision. This year, the promoters are particularly honoured to be able to present a world premiere on 1 April. Exclusively for Time Warp – International Festival for Jetztmusik and Media Art, Ricardo Villalobos, Moritz von Oswald and Max Loderbauer will be performing a newly composed new score for the silent film classic “Berlin – Sinfonie der Großstadt” live in Mannheim’s Atlantis cinema.

In February 2008, the three dignitaries of today’s electronic music scene will be in the studio together, composing the background music – the so-called cinemix – for the silent movie masterpiece. An extensive technical setup is needed to let the three musicians perform their soundtrack to the film live for festival goers. Following last year’s cinemix by Laurent Garnier for the French poetic docudrama “Finis Terrae” by Jean Epstein, cinemixes have now established themselves as a successful part of the festival week.

The rhythm of Berlin has fascinated generations: film maker Walther Ruttmann was inspired by the pulsating life in the city in the roaring twenties to make one of the most important documentaries of the silent film era. In 2008, three musicians, who have each in their own way influenced the rhythm of Berlin’s nightlife in the past few years, will attempt to give the pulse of the 1927 film a new sound with rhythms, melodies and tones from today. Ricardo Villalobos is one of today’s foremost jetztmusik artists, and his characteristic style as a DJ and producer has been a decisive contribution to Berlin’s nightlife. With Moritz von Oswald and Max Loderbauer at his side, the project now counts two further pioneers who have left an indelible mark on the evolution of electronic music with countless projects.

Together, these three protagonists of today’s nightlife in Berlin will be breathing new life into the film with their interpretation of the rhythm of the city. And that in highly fitting surroundings for this prestigious event: Mannheim’s Atlantis Cinema.
