It’s not very common for 11 to open her doors for a clubnight on sunday, but on sunday the 18th of June we have all the more reason to do so. The Canadian dj and producer Tiga will join us on the 11th floor to stir things up. A sunday night with a saturday night line-up...Tiga Sontag, who was born and raised in Montréal, is one of the biggest stars in the electronic scene. As a child he followed his hippy parents around the world to eventually return to his homecountry of Canada. Back in Montreal he was dissapointed by what the nightlife in his hometown had to offer. He decided to get together with some friends and organise a few small parties. Soon he found himself to be one of the leading figures in the scene. Tiga was responsible for the first big raves and festivals known in Canada in the early ‘90’s. It was in ’98 when Tiga and his friend Mark Dillon started the label Turbo Recordings, which would later release tracks by the likes of Jesper Dahlbäck, Jori Hulkkonen, The Hacker, Martini Brös, Headman and many others. The label is also responsible for succesfull mix-cd’s as Montreal Mix Sessions and Helsinki Mix Sessions.
But his real breakthrough came with the release of the single ‘Sunglasses at night’ by Tiga and Zyntherius, an alias for Tiga and his Finnish friend, dj and producer Jori Hulkkonen. Corey Glover’s cover becomes a worldwide hit and is partially held responsible for the breakthrough of the electro-clash hype.
And it doesn’t end there. In 2002 Tiga is picked to mix the famous DJ-Kicks series from the respected label !K7. This cd carries the cover which would later influence Tiga’s career in a big way, his version of Nelly’s hiphop-hit ‘Hot in Herre’. Characteristic for his sound and for the tracks he would later release are his slightly feminine sounding vocals thrown over a pumping beat and strong synthesizers. Whilst acid-house is busy making a come-back, Tiga scores with his huge hit-track ‘Pleasure from the bass’, followed by the Public Enemy-cover ‘Louder than a bomb’. This past year Tiga finally released his debut-album ‘Sexor’, which brings tracks like ‘Far from home’ and ‘Good as gold’.
Tiga will be accompanied by two of 11’s most prominent residents. Joost van Bellen is the frontman of the infamous Rauw-parties, one of 11’s most succesfull and longest-running club nights. Van Bellen is known as one of the leading cats in the crossover sound between dance, punk, pop and rock and everything else that is raw, rugged and dirty. In a nutshell the perfect man to get temperatures rising before Tiga’s performance. Visuals are supplied by Citizen aka Meeus van Dis. As a talented vj, graphic designer and videoprogammer for 11, Meeus is the best person to fill our 12 screens with inspiring visuals.
