CHIC feat. Nile Rodgers will give a lesson in dance music at Sónar 2006.CHIC feat. Nile Rodgers will give a lesson in dance music at Sónar 2006. CHIC will always be a name connected to disco music. In fact, the project led by Nile Rodgers and the late Bernard Edwards sold more records during the golden years of mirror ball and disco culture than any other group. And it wasn’t by sheer chance. Chic worked like a real band in an environment in which the super producers ran the show, creating and disposing of multiple stars at their convenience. They emerged at the right moment, when disco music had arrived at its worst moment following the boycott promoted by traditional rock circles under the motto “disco sucks!” with campaigns of public record burnings.
Without a doubt, the Rodgers-Edwards collaboration produced the best results on the disco scene. Their creation includes some of the hymns of this genre, like “Dance Dance Dance”, “Chic Cheer”, “Le Freak”, “Everybody Dance”, and above all the mythical “Good Times”, a very effective song on the dance floor. Queen copied its bass line for their best-selling hit “Another One Bites the Dust”, and it helped build the first hip hop era hit, the classic by the Sugarhill Gang, “Rapper´s Delight”. In addition, their visionary productions helped consolidate new styles such as house, dance pop and electro, which would end up taking over in the years to come.
Today, Neil Rodgers is one of the most respected people in pop music. During the 80’s and 90’s he became a kind of magician of success, leaving his mark on key records of artists such as David Bowie, Duran Duran, INXS, B-52´s and Madonna, among others. With Madonna he recorded “Like A Virgin”, a debut album that sold, 14 million copies in the US alone. Since the death of Edwards a decade ago, the rebuilt CHIC includes Sylver Logan Sharp and Jenn Thomas as main singers. All of these years, the band has remained active, giving performances around the world.
