The Sónar programme puts an emphasis on new music proposals that have emerged in the Netherlands. And Jamaican-born music has become the breeding ground for a large part of the disciplines related to dance harmonies. Two showcases, on Thursday and Saturday afternoon at Sonar by Day, focus exclusively on new sounds developed in the Netherlands over the last couple of years. MusicXport, the Dutch platform which support new musical projects, and Kindred Spirits, the eclectic label from Amsterdam, will bring to Sónar 2006 their best talents. Hip hop, soul, afrobeat, jazz, rap, scratches, broken beats and psychedelia will alternate with distinct proposals.

Sounds of Jamaica
Jamaican-born music has become the breeding ground for a large part of the disciplines related to dance harmonies. Traces of this sound can be heard in the music of various artists programmed for this year’s edition of Sónar.
The selection is headed by master Linton Kwesi Johnson & Dennis Bovell Dub Band, and includes artists of distinct qualities: from dub and classic reggae (Fat Freddy´s Drop) to the post-modern eccentricities of Modeselektor and their tachycardiac dubstep, as well as the urban dub of Barbara Preisinger, founder with Stefan Betke of the label ~scape. Pole & Band will teach us a lesson in avant-garde dub. While Bus feat. MC SOOM-T opts for electronic post-dub seasoned with the freshest toasting. A touch of dub is never missing in the luxurious sessions of Gilles Peterson & MC Earl Zinger, as well as in the instrumental landscapes shaped by young Eliot Lipp. If what you’re looking for is a bit of dancehall, check out Diplo + A-Trak, the Harlem Globe Trotters of the turntable.
Another long-awaited moment for lovers of reggae, dancehall and dub is the appearance of Dom, who will act as ambassador of the turntables. His British label, the prestigious Blood and Fire, did an impeccable job re-editing classics and hidden jewels of the genre from the late 70’s and early 80’s.
Sónar 2006 will also be proud to showcase one of the most outstanding artists in Jamaican culture. Linton Kwesi Johnson & Dennis Bovell Dub Band will give their first concert in Spain since 1998, offering a piece of Jamaican cultural history.
A dub poet born in 1952, Johnson’s extensive biography includes affiliation with the Black Panthers, work as a journalist, management of his own label (LKJ), and a multitude of books of poems published and translated in various languages. During the 70’s he was part of the romantic band Rasta Love, a group of poets and timpani players that spread beyond their borders. Soon, Johnson’s poetry found inspiration in the socio-cultural problems of his time such as racism, violence, and the daily struggle of Black society. It crossed the Atlantic to catch on in Great Britain in the 70’s. That’s why his records have been so successful in Western culture and are among the most- sold reggae records of all time. In the early 80’s, he founded the label LKJ, producing numerous works with other Jamaican poets such as Michael Smith and Jean Binta Breeze, as well as Caribbean jazz trumpet player Shake Keane. Linton Kwesi Johnson will be joined by the legendary Dennis Bovell Dub Band. They’ve been performing together around the world for more than 20 years.
