STRP is a festival at the intersection of art, technology and popular culture in their full context. The first edition of the STRP festival will take place in Eindhoven (NL) from March 24 - 26.STRP is a festival at the intersection of art, technology and popular culture in the full context of all art disciplines. A festival where the public is treated to a broad palette of works through in-depth presentations and large spectacles, which provide an image of how visual art, design, stage arts, film, architecture and popular culture develop themselves through the means or appliance of both new and existing technology.
The first edition of the STRP festival will take place in Eindhoven (Netherlands) from march 23 (2006) until march 26 (2006). Its focus is on the commonalities between art, popular culture and technology. Performances, exhibits and presentations will make up the festival that will be taking place in a historical space. STRP will take place on Strijp S, the 'holy' ground of the forbidden city of Philips where in the 20th century numerous technological innovations were made. As a matter of fact, this is probably the spot where most of the inventions in all of Europe were made! The compact disc, cassette recorder, the technologically superior video2000 and many others. Strijp S is the place where Einstein once worked and the first Dutch overseas (Indonesian) radio connection was established. Philips has worked together with many artists, giving them unimaginable technological opportunities. One of the most ambitious amalgamations of art and technology, ‘Poeme Electronique’ (a collaboration between the architect Le Corbusier and composer Edgard Varese for the World Exhibition in Brussels of 1958), was developed at Strijp S. Its also the place where electronic music composer Dick Raaijmakers completed the first electronic music album almost 50 years ago, and just around the corner Joris Ivens made the first Dutch movie with sound.
In the coming years Philips will be pulling out of this industrial area, gradually giving it back to the people of Eindhoven. This will create the largest inner-city development area of Europe. Culture, highbrow and lowbrow, will be given an important role. Among others they will continue redeveloping Le Courbusiers' Pavilion ‘Le Poeme Electronique’ in which the technology of then is converted into the more sophisticated possibilities of today.
What place could be better suited for a festival on art and technology?
