This year, he was playing in one of Amsterdam’s nicest clubs, 11. Since he was going to be playing solo the entire night, I decided to go early to see “der Deutsche Meister” do what he’s good at; playing a long set. Sven started around eleven, playing spherical, minimal records.
A good part of the crowd started dancing enthusiastically from the start, which gave a nice atmosphere to start with.
Sven, who is the godfather of Techno in the German scene and busy organising and performing since the early 80’s, specialises in entertaining a crowd. The set he played wasn’t brilliant musically, maybe even lacking effort, but he knew just how to hit the right spot, and worked the crowd into bliss. Unfortunately too many people were inside, which resulted in too little room for dancing and annoyed faces when unavoidably stepping someone’s toes. However, the lack of room luckily did not brake the spirit, as there where many happy faces dancing and cheering when Sven laid up the next record.
In the four and a half hours he played, many different styles where showcased. Minimal, acid like records, some electro orientated and even more going into techno; all styles where included. Sven didn’t do the greatest job mixing, but he gets away with it, saved by his charisma setting the room on fire. The man himself obviously, after a slow start, had a great time, and his interaction with the crowd was amazing. Fortunately he was in quite a good condition and there weren’t too many groupies backstage to distract him from his set.
Around half past four, after playing the last records, Sven grabbed the microphone and gave the audience a big thank you, which was followed by a massive applause from the crowd. All together, it was a nice evening to close down the year 2005 and take a fresh step into 2006. Wish u all a happy new year!
