News: hawtin wants multi-touch screen

Techno don Richie Hawtin reveals what he thinks is the future of digital DJing.

Techno don Richie Hawtin reveals what he thinks is the future of digital DJing.

Self-confessed tech head Richie Hawtin has made known that he’s currently looking into touch-screen interface technology so that he can control software program Ableton Live more efficiently.

Hawtin’s revelations emerged during an interview published in our equipment focussed EQ magazine, that comes free with the current issue of DJmag.

Touch-screen technology may be the perfect interface for digital DJing
“The biggest problem we are all faced with as artists is finding interesting and creative ways to interface with all the technology and software that’s presented to us,” says Hawtin.

In particular, Hawtin has been talking to Parisian company Jazz Mutant regarding their new multi-touch Lemur product.

“I’m looking at having it talk to Ableton so I can have further control,” he says. “Touch-screen has always been mono-touch, where you can only touch one place on a screen at any one time, but with the Lemur you can multi-touch so you can map a number of different parameters. The thing that holds us back these days is not ideas or inspiration. The software is there also, and the hardware. We just need ways of connecting things together more efficiently.”

Buy the latest issue of DJmag today, including our free EQ supplement containing the full three-page interview with Hawtin.

Wasn't beatfreax also going to interview him? Has he not yet approved the interview? because several other dutch sites have allready published their interviews.

Unfortunaly he ran out of time, because we had planned a longer interview.

Maybe he needs to look into this controller:

Be sure to check out the demo movie where Traktor is controlled by this insane device.

Wow! That movie shows that multi touch screens are way more advanced than I thought! From the look of it they are actually pretty accurate.

I had my JazzMutant Lemur controller delivered last friday, and I've used it for the first time in my live setup for a radio gig yesterday evening.
although I'm just learning how to build my templates and combine them with Ableton, I'm already really happy with it.

In my opinion, the Lemur really is a huge step foreward.
